so i've just read an article in my magazine called challenge its about economy and there were talking about "beurger king muslim" beur in french slang means "arab" and in july 2005 opened this new fast food in clichy -sous- bois (93)...same prices than Mc donalds same settings but the difference is that the women who work there are veiled and tell "salam aleikoum" (hi) when they are talking
the food is somewhat different since the meat is "halal" the cows are killed following by traditions and customs
there is in france 5 millions of muslims which represents a big market but it many people don't agree with berguer king muslim since france's traditions is republic secularism ,and we dont have to show our religions in public but the mayor of the town thinks it's a great idea and same for businessmen who would like to buy the name of the society ....
what do u think about that?i don't really agree because here we have this tradition that everyone has be mixed up no difference ....and i know in countries like US or UK u have what we call in french "le communautarisme" which means asian ppl will go and live to these areas while white people will be somewhere else ...
and u how is it in your countries?which politic ? |

I think people should be able to do whatever they want to. If they want to have a resturant with Muslim traditions, so be it (as long as they allow non muslim ppl there as well).
I used to think that converting everyone to the same culture was a great idea, but it's not. Let everyone do their thing, it also increases the (cultural) diversity of the country.
And it's not like a muslim fast food chain will harm anyone. |

Cause I lived in Canada for one year? :)
It's so awesome to walk into a China, Italy, India, Pakistan or France for that matter, in the middle of a north American city. Makes these cities a lot more interesting :) |

| I never realized the french were so religio-phobic (just made up that term). I guess they don't respect freedom of religion like we do in America. |

erik that's not about being right or wrong ...but just sharing the same opinion than you ....countries just have differents politics like i said US chose to have differents communities unless france decided to mix everyone up like a melting pot ....so all these politics can be good and bad but now im just wondering if france isn't changing and would like to be like US or UK with own communities .....about a simple fast food chain i don't mind but if it's more then im against ! |

That's what I love about Toronto.
At any time I can go downtown have this huge selection of Vietnamese, Chinese, Etheopian, Japanese, Western Indian, Eastern Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern and of course North American style food.
I love them all. :)
In regards to the article, I don't see anything wrong with it.
To me it's no different than if I go for some sushi and see Japanese women in traditional Japanese garb; I would expect it really... |

| I don't see what the problem is. I think it's great that someone took the initiative to take advantage of the muslims in France. I certainly wouldn't go to a restaurant just because of religion, I'd go there because of the food :eyes:. (according to marie elise[that's your name right?], they serve the same stuff as mcdonalds) |
