hey guys. well my computer stopped working. It was on, everything was good, then i went to go watch t.v. for abit. when i go away from my computer for 5 minutes, the monitor automatically hibernates to save power, but when i went back, it wouldnt go back on at all.
so i restarted the computer, pressed F8, and tryed to go into safe mode. it got to the log in screen slowly, i got in, but then everything froze and i couldnt get in to do a virus check or anything. turned it off again, then back on, tryed safe mode again, and it wouldnt go past the log in. then again, wouldnt get to the log in at all.
now when i start it, it just shows the first black screen when a computer starts up, with all your ram info and all that, but just stays there, like this:

if i put in my system restore disk (1 of 3), it detects that, and goes into that disk. usually it gives me the recommended option, to delete C: drive and replace it with the default stuff the computer came with, and leave the D: drive(which has ALL of my stuff) alone. i've done it before, and then its perfect, just have to install programs and stuff again on the C: drive, not a problem.
This time though when it goes in, a box first pops up, saying there is no system drive. after i click that i get this screen:

so i click next, then it goes into the normal options, but the option to just delete the C: drive, its greyed out showing you cant choose it, and gives theres other options about partions and deleting the drives completely, like this:

I DO NOT want my D: drive gone, i have pictures from 4 years up until now and so much stuff on it, and if theres gone, i dont know what i'll do. i wish i backed that stuff up before.
someone please help!! I have no idea what to do, and no money to fix it :( :( I figured someone here would know maybe |

LOL @ this comment...you do this often Dan?
Do you have access to another computer? If so, you could take out this drive, change the jumper to slave and connect it to that computer. You would then move your files to that computer's main hard drive so they're safe, then wipe this one clean and start fresh.
Then you could take a class from me to learn how you can avoid this stuff happening. ;) |

Don't be scared...nothing in there will bite you. I'd walk you through it, but your gek0 buddy is offering his computer to throw it in, so I'll let him take the reigns.
Unless you have another PC there, I don't mind helping. |

Given that you're able to boot with the recovery disc, it looks to me like a hard drive crash, and it's possible that the partition table got corrupted. Are C and D two different physical drives or just different partitions on the same drive? If it's the latter, your options are a lot more limited.
I'd first try putting in your Windows disc and see if you can get into the recovery console (not ASR). If you can get that far, then you'll be able to make a backup of your files.
If that doesn't work and your partition table and/or MBR are corrupted, you're going to be in a lot of trouble if you don't have backups. My associate at work has some data recovery utilities that sometimes help in these "emergency" situations - let me know if nothing else works. In the meantime, don't do anything stupid like reformatting your data drive. |

you need a linux live boot cd like knoppix and a usb thumbdrive or hdd depending on how much you need to recover..
but then you also need to know linux..
other than that, you need to take the drive out and put it in another pc |

both C: and D: are their owns drives far as i know.
i'll try the windows disk.
also, could i just take the D: drive out, then use my recover disk and delete the C: drive, then once it boots up again, attach the D: drive?
i do have a usb external drive is i somehow could just transfer stuff to it for a backup |

from what I can see on the black BIOS start screen everything is fine, except that in the "PRI SLAVE DISK" (primary slave hard drive, which is your C:/ drive) is listed as none.
What this means is that for some reason your computer isn't recognising that it is there.
Basically there are 2 options:
1)open your tower up, and check all connections to the hard drive(s), possibly replace the IDE cable (the wide one (usually gray) that CD/DVD/HDD drives use to connect with. Assuming they aren't SATA cables, but i doubt it considering you said you've had it about 2 years.
Replace the hard-drive with a different one, and load windows to see if that works. (should work, and be able to get all info back, if it's on the other hard drive)
If you need any help with this just let me know.
btw, i have a 40 gig removable HDD, and 2 spare internal HDD lying around you can use/have if you want em. they are small around 8G drives, but enough to get windows on, check ur files, and assess any damage done. |
