Sidechaining everywhere

Hi by the way (im new here).

Anyway, is it me or has there been a sudden obsession in the last few years in mastering pretty much every house and trance track with a deliberately noticeable routing of the kick drum into the compressor sidechain giving that pumping effect? It sounds so god damn cool and i use it as much as everyone else but its like people have forgotten how to make tracks sound cool without doing it! Its become one of those production techniques that every producer just finds it too hard to resist, just like when people worked out that reverse reverbing vocals sounded wicked. Am I going crazy or does anyone know what im on about?

Cheers :)

It doesn't sound cool, it sounds annoying as hell. If I see even one more question about sidechaining I'm going to start killing people. That's not even what a sidechain really is.

I totally agree with you if its done badly! The dancefloor seems to enjoy a good amount though. But it can be so irritating on the ear at times. Its just compressor abuse I guess.

, i still dont know what effect you're talking about. Can you please post a sample of sidechaining in use?

Is sidechaining that important? To tell you the truth I never used it.

Anyone feel free to stop me if i'm at all wrong but its when you set up a compressor so that it is triggered by an input separate to the one thats actually being compressed. On my hardware compressor the sidechain is labelled "key input". Just listen to some cheesy modern house track like Eric Prydz - Call on me and you'll know what i mean :).

I've tried sidechaining with MDE-X and it just doesn't work. I still don't get it, but I guess it's supposed to bring the kick and bass out when they hit? :conf:

imo its the worst with basslines. People don't even write basslines anymore, its just one long note with a sidechain :whip:

You can hear it on this track, on the vocals:

Benni Bennasi feat. Dhahy - Every Single Day Sample

It's not an effect that's really noticeble, and 99% of people subconsiously accept it because it's subtle.

Hence, why people like to substitute it for an actual bassline groove. Its just like using presets. It has its places, but eventually, after a short period of time, everyone sounds the exact same. You cant do a ing lot with plain whole notes and thats unfortunately what the majority of sidechains sound like. It definitely has its place and in some instances it can sound good, but often times its too simplistic and well... ty for my tastes. Songs in the likes of Call On Me by Eric Prydz would be a favorite of mine had the sidechaining not been so deep. Its a cheesy song, yeah, but it has a great 80s feel to it that makes me want to like it and I do, but it the score for it falls with that ultra deep, almost gated sidechaining. I'd be glad if sidechaining would take a freaking back burner to better, rolling and/or funky basslines though. Just my two cents...

Cheers,
Zac

Here's a basic example of side-chaining, something I put together really fast, so people have an idea of what it sounds like :)

clicky
