only gsm works overseas but even if your plan has coverage overseas, i wouldn't do it. US plans have suckage overseas rates. it's much easier buying a SIM card in the country where you'll be travelling to.

does your phone have a removable little chip in the back, behind the battery? (or does it have a place for the chip to go in?) if so, then you can buy a SIM card (buy it at a cell phone store in greece along with a 30-40 Euros prepaid card or u'll be charged not only for making international calls but also for roaming, which dually sucks). if your phone doesn't have the place where the SIM card fits, then buy a phone that has it in the US and do the rest in greece :)

oh! taso (nyta) goes to greece every year.. PM him to find some hotspots that are un-touristy. im sure he can totally inform of you of anything you want to know :) mad cool guy too..

as for language books, Living Language is great i think. but any of those basic level audio cds will do, upload that into your ipod and go. you can learn basic phrases on the plane ride over.

in the major cities, you wont have trouble finding people who speak english :)

What a boring trip.... No wonder many tourists dont appreciate Greece as much as they should. Greeks are friendly. If you live in the US and you are actually worried about taking precautions about your and your items safety you are stupid. No one is going to attack you, rape you or rob you. Of course if you forget something back you probably wont find it later, but where in the world do you? Theres very little crime here.
Anyway, I wouldnt bother coming all the way from the US to Greece just to see some ancient stones with a boring tour bus. Get your friends and go island hopping at the Aegean in the summer and its gonna be the best holdays of your life. I promise.

my mom brought the idea up to me a few months ago. we had been talking about going to Europe for a while and once she found out that my brother was going to be working in DC over winter break she offered to take me to Europe. we're going as part of a music director tour, she gets a deal on it through her job as a choir director.

here's a more detailed itinerary...

Singing psalms in the Footsteps of St. Paul...The letters of the Apostle, which remain relevent today, will come alive. We'll adopt Greek traditions and cultural nuances, while we plan our choral pilgrimage, ensuring our return. Local musicians will treat us to sacred and traditional music of the region. Taste the taverna cuisine. It's all good!

Day 1 > Tuesday: Depart to Greece.

Day 2 > Wednesday: Arrive Athens - Delphi.

Day 3 > Thursday: Highlights of Delphi.
Visit the Sanctuary of Apollow and explore the Museum. Ferry crossing from Patras to Corinth.

Day 4 > Friday: Highlights of Corinth - Epidavros.
In Corinth, the Apostle arrived in A.D. 50-51 to preach the Christian faith and write the first of his epistles. Prayer service/informal singing among the ruins of the ancient temple where the Apostle preached. Continue to Epidavros, in ancient times a therapeutic pilgrimage destination.

Day 5 > Saturday: Corinth Canal - Athens.
Travel the Corinth Canal, one of the wonders of the world. Half-day at leisure in Athens.

Day 6 > Sunday: Athens.
Attend Mass at the Cathedral of St. Dionysius. Tour the capital city visiting the Roman Market, temples and the ancient Agora. Walk across Maris Hill where Paul addressed the philosophers of Areopagus. See St. Paul's Well and the Acropolis

Day 7 > Monday: Return from Athens.

shutup you dumbum! (haha, sry, had to.)

i, for one, would want to see the things she is going to see. call me corny, but i love ancient history, ruins, etc. tourguides ftw! especially the weird ones that have been tour-bussing waaaay too long and say like "this is the square where all the drug dealers come to deal cocaine and heroine" LOL!!! (had ones like that in barcelona and in southern italy)

anyway, she's obligated to the tour part of trip but u know what? that's the only way you actually see the historical things, which personally, i think are VERY worth seeing.

of course the islands are ing awesome but does it look like she has that option?

what an unhelpful reply.

if you had read the entire thread you would have realized that the trip is a gift from my mom, through her church... which i appreciate 100%. just to be given the chance to see another country is amazing to me, even if you think it's a boring trip. i look forward to experiencing a different culture, seeing ancient churches, and spending a week with my mom (i only get to see her 2 or 3 times a year since we live 900 miles apart). i'm not gonna sit here and whine when i'm given this experience for FREE.

hell, if i had it my way my trip to Europe would be all about drugs & clubs... but i'm going with my MOM for s sake, lol.

This is probably the dumbest post I've read on TA in a long time...

You're FROM Greece, you understand the social norms and are apparently numb to the social differences between your society and ours. Not only do I personally know someone who was mugged while they were in Greece, EVERY single girl with my study abroad program in the Netherlands (Not just Americans, women from all over the World) who traveled to Greece felt harassed by how "forward" (and that's being polite) most Greek men are. It's not always about crime rates, it's about how people interact socially, and it can make people uncomfortable, especially if they travel into a country where they don't understand the acceptable social norms. All Myra is trying to do is educate herself.

And if you think for a minute that experiencing the history of a country is "boring," I feel incredibly sorry for you...
