A PATENT may allow Sony to ensure that no game would be playable from any console other than the one in which it was first read.
Joystiq is reporting that this patent is the source of the many rumours that will mean as much to gamers as DRM is for music fans.

The technology would allow an authentication code to be read and then rendered unreadable, making the software unplayable on any machine but the one which first read it.

But this has caused considerable backlash from the gaming community. While many are aware of the double profit companies make on pre-owned games, this would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer.

No less than Ken Kataguri himself is listed among the inventors, which makes it look like this is a move that came from very high up. It has already been pointed out that many Playstation users have had to replace their console, surely this would leave us high and dry in that event.

While the PS3 hasn't been expressly mentioned in the patent in English or Japanese it would be the obvious place to employ this new technology, regardless of how little gamers will appreciate it. Between this and the DRM scandal, Sony could be looking at a serious drop in interest in the PS3. You can be sure you'll see more on this as it develops. As gamers, we can only hope that modern technology won't undermine the tried and tested barter system. µ

That's what REALLY kills this idea. But I doubt Sony will follow through with this, they have so much to lose from this patent, in comparison to what they'd gain.

thats gauranteed to happen and i'm sure the gaming community will find ways to get back at sony too. wasn't there something similar for cd's some sort of encoding. they went to a classroom and asked if anyone could find a way around it. sure enough a student put black ink around the edge of the cd and the encoding didn't work anymore. technology is made to be broken :D

Every system has an exploit, plain and simple.

Sony would not do this to their games. It would not only drop interest in their games and PS3, but it would kill the 'sharing' market. Video games are popular sometimes because one friend takes to another's house and plays it and shows it, which in turn entices the host to go get it too.

If they implement this system you can say good bye to that.

As for rentals, if this type of technology is implemented, I am sure Sony would make different discs without this technology. For a premium ofcourse.

I honestly do hope sony goes under. This is just part of their history of abusing consumers over the 15 years. No more Sony products for me!!!(except the headphones which i currently own, lol)

My good friends at Pacific Mall will find a way

My two cents is this is all a B.S. ploy by xbox to create anger towards ps3 thus ensuring the success of their new gaming system. Im sure that sony has some economist working for them pointing out tha they would sink the company should they do such a stupid thing!!!

Gotta love the land of internet where lies are king ;)
And in other notes microsoft will send you $238971291981 if you forward a tracking email, LOL

Moral Hazard
if they were to do this I'll be getting an x-box 360 rather then ps3.
Pettiscool
i cant see this acually happening
