BTW... CIRCUS has added another EAW Sound system to the new big room. It now has the same concert speakers that Avalon has right above the stage. :eyespop: |

First off I like other forms of EDM besides Trance.
Now I do not know the dynamics of opening a room, nor I will probly never get to find that out. So what?? When I was walking around I saw some people sitting on the Go-go boxes or just standing there. Clearly I was not the only one who was not into your set. I thought part of the dynamics of an opening Dj or any Dj for that matter was to read the crowd. If I saw no one dancing during my set I would want to do something about it.
I am in no means calling you a Bad Dj, I was just not feeling your set (again) For me there was somthing missing in the Tracks. I do not need "banging" tracks to get my booty shakeing.. But I do need a little something. |

What a night!!!!!!! Wow...I told Sarah earlier that evening that I had lots to celebrate & we were gonna really party it up...starting with the famous Everclear, and so indeed we did!
Sarah & I started the night upstairs meeting up with Kris & Michelle (no clue yet all the crazy times to come for us 4 girls that night...lol...), and with our fave bartender getting some drinks together...thanx Michelle & Kris for getting the party started! ;) Start with the pics, dancing, meeting/hanging Cody Lee & then Scumfrog. Then Scumfrog gets things going downstairs and the craziness begins. Spent the night between the main room & outside with friends, with Sarah & I bein quite the pair that night. :crazy: Music was full of energy & we managed to still get in lots of fun dancing with Kris, Michelle, DJ Woody (SO great to finally meet you, and THANKS for everything! & its Julie, not Julia...:tongue2 ), Bjorn, Simon and other TAs. Really, as others have noted - a real fun vibe with room to get the booty shakin!
Of course we top off the night at Bob's after hours for some more music, dancing and chilling long after the sun came up...good times, good peeps, good tunes ;)
Now only 2 more days to chill b4 this weekend's festivities begin already!!!! |

I was excited to see this guy cuz I know Armin plays a lot of his tracks..I couldn't wait to see what this guy was about.!! HOLY ING !!! :eyespop: NON STOP DANCING!! wow!! Id have to say between Scumfrog and Matthew ..that was the best music I've heard in awhile... Just what I needed thats for sure! EVERYONE WAS DANCING!!!!!!!It was great!! I even did a little wishy washy with my asian friend... ( just for funn!!!):haha: Arfboy and Bjorn!!wooo yaaaa you guys ROCK!!! To those TA's that were not there..you were MISSED!! I thought of you guys the entire time wishing I could record the night for you...definately a night that you guys would have enjoyed!! ( Mike, Carrie, Robert..)
I had a blast!! Definately cannot wait to see these guys again... !! GREAT TIMES... Thank you Michelle... Mike ( for saving the day again..in a few ways!!) Aj( remind me to kick you), Peter.. The Scumfrog, and Matthew... What a weekend!!!!

K, here's your lesson in things you need to adress as an opening dj... maybe I can enlighten you a bit.
#1. You need to figure out who you're opening for and what kinda sound they play. Hence you have to somewhat tailor your sound to their sound to some degree, but keep your own sound still intact so that you are still offering something as an individual and not just as a "me too" DJ.
#2. You start @ 9pm. This absolutely sucks.... When was the last time you went to the club @ 9am ? I myself NEVER go to the club that early, so therefore you're playing to an empty room for at least an hour. So you play mellow tracks that groove along till you can step it up a notch when people start filling the place up. I had a nice little group of about 20 people dancing up by the DJ booth for quite sometime which was honestly a miracle, because people don't normally do that when it's empty. They wait awhile till more show up....
#3. The "I'm not dancing till there's some other people dancin" We all know this well from high-school... People don't normally dance much when there's hardly anyone in a club, that's a fact. I have absolutely no control with peoples insecurities about dancing on a empty floor. If you notice as a room fills up, people dance more.
#4. "Reading the crowd" I actually think I can read a crowd pretty darn well compared to most DJ's. For example, the first track that scumfrog played was a terrible choice as it just didn't ignite any energy into the crowd ( Not to mention I played that same track not 30 mins earlier as it's a good warm-up track ) A dj that can read a crowd knows what to play and when to play it based off of a crowd and the vibe of the room... That's why when he went on it seemed like nothing happened.
#5. Not overshadowing who you're opening for.... As an opening dj you MUST be responsible and not play a bunch of bangin' tracks that'll over shadow the next guy up. You can't play your BPM ( Beats per minute ) too fast either, because what if you're playing @ 132BPM and the next guy only plays at 128, he's gonna be pissed. It's little things like that that someone after you will respect what you did. You boy Marcus Schultz for example prolly plays more around 134BPM, when I normally play around 128BPM to open a room... so maybe that's part of the reason why you can't get into my sets, they're too slow for your tastes. In addition, ANYONE can drop a bunch of banging tracks to get a crowd moving, or drop a bunch of popular tracks. To me this is like selling out.... I personally like to play new music that people have never heard before, and I like to think that the quality of the music I play is first class.
Anyway, I hope this gives you a little insight into what it takes to open... Try to pay more attention to these things next time you see someone open and watch what they do. Maybe then you'll understand my logic a little more about how I do it, and why... |
