Toronto police will never satisfy black community

If the cops were there im sure they'd be accused of racial profiling. Now that they weren't there they are accused of neglect. Perhaps this community should stop pointing fingers at the police and start to address what is obviously a huge problem for them and the entire city as a whole. Apparently the pastor knew there were "gunmen" in the crowd but didnt call the police. ABove all the gunmen should be the ones held in contempt but if there is any third party that should also hold culpabilty in this case it's the pastor, NOT the police.
For shame....
| quote: | Toronto police still have few answers for Nadia Beckles, the latest mother in the city left struggling to come to terms with the loss of a son to gun violence.
Nadia wept repeatedly yesterday as she recalled watching her son Amon die Friday in a shocking attack during a funeral at a Rexdale church for his buddy, whose murder the 18-year-old had witnessed just a week earlier.
"I ran outside and there was my son lying on the concrete with bullet holes in his body, on the cold ground, as though he had no life, as though he didn't mean anything to anybody, as though he was the dirt on the ground," the grief-stricken mom told CFTO News yesterday through tears.
"I raised him for 18 years and some bastard just took him away," Nadia continued.
Like his friend, Jamal Hemmings, Amon was a young parent. His 18-month-old daughter and Hemmings' two-year-old son will now grow up without their fathers.
RELATED?
Amon was with Hemmings, 17, when he was gunned down Nov. 9 in a parking lot in the Oakwood and Eglinton Aves. area.
In his short life, Nadia said her son touched the hearts of all those who knew him.
And, one way or another, she's convinced those responsible for her son's killing will be punished eventually.
"I don't have any hatred for them," Nadia said. "They don't have to answer to us, but the day they meet their maker, they'll have to answer to him."
NO POLICE
Many of the mourners at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Albion Rd. on Friday, who scrambled beneath church pews to avoid getting caught in the crossfire, were angry police didn't attend Hemmings' funeral service -- a decision Nadia questioned yesterday as well.
"They did not provide the necessities to protect each and every one, not just my son," she said of police.
No arrests have been made in either of the slayings -- Toronto's 66th and 69th homicides of the year, 48 of which have involved guns.
And as outrage over the city's gun violence mounts, there were more bullets flying in broad daylight yesterday.
About an hour before a rally was held at the church where Amon was killed, gunfire erupted downtown in the area of Wellesley and Sherbourne Sts.
Police arrived at the St. Jamestown highrise complex around 12:30 p.m. and found several shell casings near a playground.
The incident was described by witnesses as a gunfight between two men.
Nobody was injured in the shooting.

| I bet he'd have been a productive member of society, what with being 18 and having a daughter who's a year and a half old! |

well the thing is, had there been cops at the funeral and had nothing gone down, the people at the church would have said " why do they pressure us with police there"
and because they weren't " why the hell weren't they there"
you cannottttt be happy. |

| Moral Hazard |
| I heard some paster the other day postulating that the Feds should invoke the War Measures Act to route out the gang members and destroy the organizations. This frightened me at first, however, the more I thought about it the more I thought it might be a good idea. That said, anytime you allow civil liberties to be suspended one must be weary. Anyone have any thoughts on this idea? |

No way!
I cannot support this at all.
My suggestion is for the black community to face up to the problem and start identifiying the culprits or they will continue to live in fear and sorrow. These gunmen were at the funeral yet nobody knows who they are?
GIVE ME A BREAK!!! |

^^^ I'd share those concerns...suspending civil liberties is indeed a serious measure...and I'm not sure the situation has come to that.
personally, I'd rather see "reasonable limitations" on certain Charter rights...namely where race is concerned. I have no problem with profiling if it's done in a very regulated and highly scrutinized manner.
When is this ing city going to acknowledge that this isn't just a "youth" or "gun" problem??? :whip:
this is a problem in SPECIFIC communities...communities made up of visible minorities. Look at who is shooting who...it's ALMOST ALWAYS a visible minority shooting/assaulting someone of their own or rival minority group.
IT IS NOT RACIST TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS *FACT*.
I'm so ing sick of the PC bull here... the community leaders who cry racism and then blame the police when something like this happens...they do their own communities a huge disservice by seeking to lay blame instead of working to find solutions. |

u read my mind.
but its always somebody's son so i can understand it.
u know how will we solve this?
death penalty.
eye for an eye, easy as that |

^^^ let's not rehash that debate...someone can post previous threads.
the death penalty does not deter crime, it does not save taxpayers' money and it (obviously) doesn't rehabilitate/reform anyone. |

| Oh now that I re-read it, Hemmings, who was 17 when he was shot, had a 2 year old daughter. Hooray! |

reasonable limitations are set by case law, police are already aware of how charter rights are applied and generally try to work within them. Changing the currently acceptable "limitations" takes years. Without court decisions the only other way is the war measures act.
I'm not advocating this, just thought I would bring it to mind.
BTW, I don't think we've reached the point where this is necessary yet. |

who cares about taxpayers money when innocent kids are getting shot bro????
and jail does rehabilitate thugs???
cmon now 20 y/o killer will be productive member of society after 10-15 years behind bars??
and wouldnt it be much cheaper just to waste them instead of feeding them for 10-15 years? |
