For those of you who don't regularly watch Fifth Gear, this is a segment from an episode whereupon Tiff Needle and company crash test a Smart Fortwo against a concrete barrier at 70 mph.

Although the car is dummy-less, providing no real indication of how a human might fare in such a collision, the vehicle's performance itself is astounding. As you see in the video, the car's Tridion frame actually stays intact, but for one tiny kink in the left a-pillar. Tiff then goes around to the other side and opens - and shuts - the door. You may have problems, however, walking.

I still want one what with all the driving I do.

I'm glad you're one of the few that can actually understand just how safe that car is. So many people I talked to told me the same damn thing "how can that little thing be safe if it collides with an Expedition? I'll be safer in an Expedition" The you will. I tried to explain it so many times, often just giving up in the end, going "fine, buy your goddamn tank and run the streets"

hehe, i was expecting it to roll over that barrier

Wow, i thought it was going to explode in a billion pieces. I'm surprised of how safe they can be!

One of my dream is to buy a monster truck or an wheeled APC for daily use.

Still... I don't think you'd be able to "walk away" from a hit like that (on the video).

You'd probably be hugging a wheelchair for the rest of your life... (check out the leg room in the video)

I agree, these cars are amazingly safe.

However - consider the forces acting on one's body going from 70 MPH to 0 MPH in 1/10th of a second.

Sure - you won't be ejected or crushed by steering columns/dash, but nearly every bone in your body will be broken and I suspect internal injuries would cause death.

Too ing much! :whip: :whip: :whip:

I'd save a few grand and buy that new Toyota that replaced the Echo, if I was in the market.

StereoPrincess
lets write the show and have them do one with an actual dummy.

Agreed. If I was in a head on crash in my Trans Am, the damage to the car probably wouldnt look too bad, but I'd likely have a broken neck from whiplash.

I'd be interested to see how a dummy would fare.
