One should only have a child if they posses the financial capacity to raise the child through to independence with an average/above standard of living.

So in other words, so long as they have money? It doesn't matter if they are fit to be a parent, and are even able to teach basic ethics?

in effect though, he's kinda right. What are the odds of a mentally unwell person being 'well off' in this world? and if they are, that means they are able to function properly in our world if they are making that kind of moneys. And if they are able to function properly, they can teach their kids to function properly. Hence, they should be allowed to have kids.

I already did. And I am not vying to disect, I am just very curious as to how people view this.

Ahh but of course there would be exceptions to this.

Perhaps the mentally handicapped person won the lottery, or had the money inherited?

And even if they did have money, that still doesn't necessarily mean that they are capable of raising a child well.

See, another point I am not addressing. I don't care how they fair financially, I am talking about their abilty to rear a child. I don't think someone who is mentally unstable can raise a child properly.

define mentally unstable? i know a lot of people who arent mentally fit to raise a child yet would not be considered mentally handicapped.

Allowing the state to decide who can and cannot reproduce is a scary thought.

If that ever happens then im moving for sure. I dont want to live in a country like that.

Which is why I make a blanket 'no' statement. Better safe than sorry. Screw you liberals.

Someone who is "Mentally handicapped".

Perhaps someone with Down Syndrome, or Schizophrenia. Manic Depression, or something of the like.

And if the state doesn't stop these people from HAVING the children initially, they will end up taking the child away later (most likely) anyway. So what is the better option?

Handicapped people with mental deficiency mostly not able to give birth because they born sterile.

Schizophrenia is not a serious mental illness

ok so what if the person has a mild form? Or what if the state starts to use that method to falsify their diagnosis against people in order to prevent them from having kids? Or what if some day after that precedent has been passed we expand it to other diseases?

No thanks. I dont want to live in hitler's germany, But thanks anyways.
