You're right - it's impossible to define cheese because it's a label which means different things to different people. But what I'm getting at is that since everybody enjoys at least something which others might consider cheese, it's daft to criticise people who enjoy music which you don't think is 'underground' or sophisticated enough.

I'm not attempting to discourage people from debating whether a certain track is good or bad. But more constructive criticism, above the level of 'this track sucks, it's cheese' really wouldn't go amiss.

I ran into a particularly vicous comment on a web page today:

quote:
Thumping trance might be popular, or UK hard house, but it would be the equivalent of playing Britney Spears. Pay attention to the music and its intentions, which are often—at least to the untrained ear—admittedly difficult to decipher without lyrics. But it is easier done than supposed. If it sounds cheesy, it’s cheesy: it’s there to sell, it’s not there to stimulate your mind, it’s a capitalist musical product, an object sold with and young girls and DJs in limousines with their bitches. It’s a similar situation in hip-hop. I am struggling to think of an alternative to “conscious hip-hop,” which has caught on very well, become the voice of several struggles including First Nations and of course Black culture worldwide. The same can be said for Rave music, which, if it is intelligent, experimental and political, probably won’t be called rave music at all, but rather techno, jungle, hardcore, minimal techno, glitch, microsound, lowercase sound, IDM, ambient, etc.

Alot of people like music that represents som particular movement that the feel the are part of, and consider anything that isn't afiliated with some sort of movement or ideal as 'cheese'. People in search of intelligence and experimentalism tend to dislike tunes with alot of cliche elements in them and harass the kids who like that stuff.

One just has to learn to ignore it, plenty of those kids enjoy stupid things for strange reasons.

I've discovered from reading these forums for a little while, that the music I enjoy is known as 'cheese', which is disliked by probably everyone I've seen on these forums.

Why do people hate it so much?

I've made some threads here, and all I get are insults against the type of music I like. Just wondering if this is only evident on the TA forums, or in the electro scene as a whole.

yes alot of those are cheese but whats the big deal? people who listen to Westlife knows its cheese but they like it anyway.
Why do people who listen to cheesy eurodance often feel ashamed?
they sometimes dont even want to mention that they listen to eurodance and instead say "trance" because it sounds much cooler and underground.

just listen to whatever you like and who gives a damn SHAJT if you like cheese or not.

I love ABBA more than any trance and I don't give a damn what people think. ABBA > trance

People don't like "cheese" because they are conditioned from a young age to automatically dislike any music that is emotional/beautiful for fear of being seen as "gay" or "weird"... that's my take. People who don't give a about stereotypes like that will go on loving real music no matter what people think.

the problem in germany is that djs that produce and spin eurodance or handsup like Pulsedriver, Ziggy X or Klubbingman say by themselves that they spin trance.

and cds that are full of these music are named "trance ..." .

people over here who are not into edm always laugh at me when I'm saying that I listen to trance because they think that I listen to this cheap cheese music.

That's the reason why especially in germany the eurodance-hands-up-bashing is so popular...this cheap music has destroyed our trance-scene...

Norman Bass - How do you like bass
East Clubbers - The real thing
Brooklyn Bounce - We are live!
Naksi Vs. Brunner - Rodina (D.O.N. Deejays Rmx)
De La Cruz feat. Taleesa - My Love Is A DJ

but honestly there are many in my collection i would say are on par with these.. check my sig :D

Well come on. They're unsubtle, simplistic and just damn obviously cheesy. However, a lot of people here will hate cheese because it's the Done Thing, when their tastes are still very under-nourished.

Cheesy music is great music as long as it's done right- because it's fun. The key to it is to explore further- pick up any dance record you hear rated just to expand your horizons. It's fine to like in-your-face party junk-food music, as long as you go beyond it.

the funny thing is, i usually really hate commercial music

in rap, i hate 50cent commercial trash, but i like 2pac

in metal, i hate nu metal, like korn, limp bizkit and slipknot, but love death metal, black metal, and not 'mainstreem' bands

but when it comes down to electronic music, i LOVE this commercial music like pulsedriver and east clubbers.. simple and effective in my view :D
