People don't like "cheese" because they are conditioned from a young age to automatically dislike any music that is emotional/beautiful for fear of being seen as "gay" or "weird"... that's my take. People who don't give a about stereotypes like that will go on loving real music no matter what people think. |
this has to be the worst comment i have ever heard on this subject. |

Well said I would have to agree, I find the longer you listen to music the more you appreciate the subtleties. Over time I have come to appreciate lots of different types of EDM, however it’s still fun to go and listen to a bit of cheese every now and then. :) |

You wouldn't think that if you lived on the same continent as me where unemotional hip pop is predominent. Trust me, I've seen first hand people unable to enjoy music with any emotion in it because they've only listened to rap for most of their lives. |

Cheese is defined as music that is fake, canned, and forced. It is trying to be something it's not. It is pretending it is deep and sophisticated, emotional stuff, but in truth it is just going through the motions, playing out some simple, tired cliche. In short, cheese music lies to you. It tries to appeal to your emotions, tug your heartstrings, and get you to feel a certain way toward it. But you feel nothing at all. Why?
Because your intelligence is being insulted. You hate being deceived. You hate being controlled and manipulated. You hate being compartmentalized into a little emotional sponge for this cheese music to fill you with tired formulas. It sounds way too affected to have any meaningful impact on you. Or anyone, for that matter.
///
Commercial is that which attempts to appeal to the most possible number of people. Something that strives for universality.
Of course, in order to achieve this aim, the music must thus be very safe, very bland, and very inoffensive. So it's not a thing, per se. It is a process. A process of political correctness, in a way.
The process of commercialization is the process of watering down and smoothing something out for mass digestion. Any genre of music can become commercial if it’s given the shiny, plastic, polished sheen of simple tinker toys (or any mass-produced consumer good). In fact, over the past fifty years, everything, from rap, to rock, to punk, to R&B, to jazz, to techno has become commercial music at one time or another. The purpose of commercial music is not to evoke emotion or have any lasting appeal. It is to move units; sell the most music to the most possible numbers of people very quickly. It is essentially fast food; something people do not value the inherent quality of but seek instantaneous and short-term sustenance.
It is not elitist to hate this process. For those of us who enjoy care, quality, professionalism, and earnest, heartfelt passion, with genuine emotion injected into our music, commercial music is blasphemy. People don't hate it because it's bad--quite the contrary, commercial music is expertly produced. No. People hate it because it's simply boring. It has to be, in order to be likable by everyone. |
Evoke emotion? Commercialism process? Cheese process? Who said ALLL commercial artists don't put "care, quality, heartfelt etc" in their music? Once again you prove to be foundation-less in your arguments, as some have mentioned before me. Are you reading what you're typing? It's the most stereotyped, ridiculous propaganda I've ever read. It's amusing and poshly written, but in the end you're arguments and posts epitomize the ignorance in many 'musically elite' people - edm or not.
Don't quit your day job, and keep the site running, I actually enjoy it. The "Ferry Corsten killed it part" cracks me up each time.

Secondly, the music you enjoy...is...probably...hated for its elements, such as embarrassing two-finger melodies on simple, crass and in your face-synths... |
And you're on traceaddict because? Let's be honest buddy, anybody, and I mean anybody, can play 99% of the 'elite' trance songs on a keyboard - with one finger. If you're looking for complex melodies trance is not the genre. Try Bach or Mosart. |

One finger? Nah... at least 2 :p. But seriously playing a melody is different than composing one... and putting the melody into a complete package of a tune is another thing altogether... |

I've discovered from reading these forums for a little while, that the music I enjoy is known as 'cheese', which is disliked by probably everyone I've seen on these forums.
Why do people hate it so much?
I've made some threads here, and all I get are insults against the type of music I like. Just wondering if this is only evident on the TA forums, or in the electro scene as a whole. |
Dumonde, Scot Project, Cosmic Gate, Rank1, Kai Tracid cheese:conf:
I also like some good cheese.

And your point is? I was merely listing some reasons as to why some would hate the kind of music that guy has in his sig. The way the melodies in that type of music are constructed, executed and implemented fall under that category.
Oh yeah, and Talla is still making and playing trance. |
