Whatever... I think it's a pointless signing for them. The Yankees do not need offense at all. They won 95 last year. With the same exact team plus a better bullpen and Damon added... I don't think they crack 100 wins. Just a feeling I have.

The other feeling I have is that the Mets are going to stink. I hate being the overdog. The only times this team has done great has been to start the season as the underdog.

The Yankees haven't bought the best team in baseball since '00. And I don't think their salary was that ridiculously high then...

No you dont, because there are players that dont want to play for the Yankees and teams dont just let franchise players go.

As for buying the best team in baseball, ever since they've been implementing this 'strategy' - theyve done nothing but up in the playoffs.

The goal of a taem is to win as many games as possible, and make the playoffs and win the world series. Over the course of a 162 game season, you may have bad teams go 15-5 over the course of 20 games but over 162 games, the teams with the best players will end up on top.

When it comes to the playoffs, the small amount of games allows for luck to come into play. This was outlined in MoneyBall and a few other books. The Yanks have gotten into the world series or have been on the brink numerous times since they last won. They ed up a few times and have run into red hot teams a few other times (red sox, marlins, angels)... this isn't the fault of the players - - they were right there but due to the small size of games in the playoffs, strange things can happen.

BTWgreat signing, Bernie has 4 rings and has a crappier arm then Damon. Damon's range factor(putouts+assists)/innings was 3rd in the league last year. You don't need to throw the ball if your ability to get to a fly ball is only bested by 2 players. The premise that the Yanks don't need more offense is silly - - they don't need a certain type of offense - big home run hitters, but they need a guy who can make contact and get on base in front of the boppers. The move brings stability and balance to the lineup.

The Yankees scored 886 runs last year. The only team in MLB with more was the Red Sox with 910. The Yankees do not need to score more runs. At all. And especially at the price of 13M a year.

They'd totally be better off using that money to get some pitching help, though I understand it's not really possible with the way the staff is constructed.

He helps though score runs more for the playoffs when the Yanks have struggled at times. When it comes down to better pitchers, the big 3 run HR opportunities aren't there. So you need guys like Damon getting on base, stealing a couple, getting a clutch double to squeek out those games.

I agree with you knowing that pitching wins championships, I think Torre knows that. I think we'll end up seeing something happen with trading Pavano. Or perhaps going after Roger Clemens after the WBC.

I'm feeling ya on the pitching angle but I still like the move (and I've been giving it a lot of thought since free agency began).

I think Mussina will have a pretty below average year. Something like 4.50 ERA at best. Randy will be about the same as last year, good games sprinkled with ones where he gives up 3 homers. Something like an ERA of 4.00. They do need better starters to ever compete with the pitching lineup that the White Sox have. 5 starters that threw over 200 innings last year. That will make any bullpen look good.
