i got an extra $150 on Christmas day, so should I spend the dough on an audiophile 24/96 or an emu 0404 with the proteus x?

Why does everyone with a question about speakers/soundcards to buy think that their question is unique enough to warrant its own thread?

There have got to be about a thousand threads about the M-Audio card in particular. The Proteus X isn't even designed for the same purpose as the Audiophile.

There are links in the FAQ and aside from that, your best resource is going to be to read reviews and do your own research, rather than asking people to take their time to feed the information to you.

Please do not ask this question.

Yes suh! Please forgive me.I am sorry for posting a question on this forum, and aggravating you. I will never ask YOU to take time out of your busy schedule to feed me information. So, once again, I am truly, truly sorry. Thanks

So which one should he buy?

I'm sorry, that was uncalled for, it just seems like I've been seeing another one of these threads every day for the past week, and we really shouldn't be when the stickies are there.

neither, get 20 crates of budwizer you have move fun with it

jokes aside....from my experience with 0404 you should avoid like the plague....one of the hardest audio cards to configure and get working......made by creative too.

0404 is a disguised soundblaster audigy 2.......pretty box but lousey drivers........stay well away.

audiophile.....excellent ASIO sound card....thumbs up !!

This is patently incorrect. I'm not sure who started this myth but it seems to be loosely based on the fact that Emu joined with Creative and marketed this product under the "Creative Professional" brand name. Nevertheless, the Emu cards have nothing whatsoever to do with Creative's cards and the Emu 0404 and 1010 cards have virtually nothing in common with the Audigy cards aside from the word "Creative".

I fully appreciate what you mean, just seemed you were a little harsh on the guy!

The whole site needs a re-vamp! Could do with references to hardware in a seperate area rather than the use of stickies in my opinion! Any post then should be ignored if the topic is in the reference area, members would get the message sooner or later!!!

I totally agree. Except for poorly written drivers in some cases :)

Yes, the original drivers were terrible. The current drivers are pretty much OK (I should know, I use them).

No, YOU are wrong. Have you actually seen one these 0404 cards and looked at the chips on it ???

If you have then you will see the same audio chip used on the audigy 2 (branded by creative) along with the EMU DSP chip.

Also, if you look more deeply into the driver inf file, you will find it is almost identical to the audigy 2 driver inf file, apart from the name and description sections which are EMU instead of Creative.

I know the two companies are closely related but the cards are more closley related. I alos know the two cards use the same chips and drivers because I have installed both on a machine I setup and both cards are identified as an Audigy 2.

Yes, and being an electrical engineer, I think I'd know better than you how to identify them (unless you are also an EE).

Even if ALL the chips and circuits were the same, that still does not make it the same card. For example, a single PLC or DSP could be used for billions of different purposes.

Many driver INFs look almost identical - the fact is, there isn't really much to an INF. It's the driver itself that contains all the code.

That is nothing more than a glitch that Emu has clarified a dozen times in their user manual and even stuck "READ THIS FIRST" pieces of paper in the packaging to instruct users NOT to allow Windows to install the Audigy drivers, because it will crash if you try to do that.

This is a direct result of the INF issue (Windows thinks it already has a driver) and won't occur if you don't already have an Audigy installed. In other words, it won't be "identified" as an Audigy 2 if you don't install the Audigy 2 drivers before installing the 0404.

You are incorrect - the Emu cards and the Creative (Audigy) cards have virtually nothing in common.
