Umm there is some truth to the urban myth but not 100% true. Sometimes it is like trying to figure out what came first, "the chicken or the egg"! They myth spawns up because a few reasons.
1) It is true that most serial killers and rapist can keep mementos of their victims and even video the acts. And yes during some investigations, you find that porn had been a part of the "psycho's" life... But given the percent of the "normal" population that views erotic material, I do not think that you can conclude that this number is higher among the perpetrators of crimes! But it makes for some good T.V. and movies. I think a better look at what type of erotic material they view would give you a more accurate portrayal of their mental state. Erotic material is one thing but watching a 10 year-old being violently raped on file is not "erotic" at that point and if you found that in your BFs closet, I would be worried... (Not to say fetish "rape" is the same thing as the rape of a 10 year-old because do not get the two confused!)
2) This myth come alot from the extreme right wing Conservatives. It is easy to say that "porn causes you to be deviant like a serial killer!" to get your point across that you do not think that people should watch porn. Think about it, no one would listen to most people that said "don't do that because I think it is wrong" but they might get more of an audience if it came with some sort of dire consequence like "Masturbating will make you go blind" or "watching porn will make you a serial killer!"
SO watching porn and being psycho are unrelated. Now being an addict at anything is not good. So, even if porn is not a bad thing, watching it and masturbating in leu of going to work and taking a shower is!!! And yes there are sex addicts and porn addicts just like there are sugar addicts and heroin addicts!!!
Ok that is all I have the energy to write right now! :) I know this is a little heavy of a conversation for c0r! But thanks for asking questions because nothing pisses me off more when people make assumptions about something that they are uneducated about! |
