You're lucky you don't have nightmares often... I have "night terrors" almost every night. What happens is very frightening because the line between reality and the dream is almost non-existant. I believe I 'wake up' at least 4 times (during an episode), each time being more real than the last. And this is always accompanied by a dark force either touching me, whispering, towering over me etc. The worst part for me, is the unexplainable surge I get through my body whenever this happens...like electricity. WEIRD I know

Not weird at all...
I used to get these a lot as a young kid...and you're explaining it EXACTLY! :nervous:

I can't say I get them anymore but sure do remember them! :(

They were so bad for me that I couldn't even sleep in my own bed. I'd sneak round the house in the middle of the night, play with the cat, find something else to do until I convinced myself that my blankets were a good enough shield from the evil swirling in the corner of my room...

i've had sleep paralysis on numerous occasions. the first time it happened was one of the most frightening experiences i've ever had. it creeps me out still to think about it.

the last nightmare i had was that i had killed prince charles and couldn't get rid of the body and i woke up terrified that i had actually killed him and was going to jail.

Anyone able to recognize while dreaming that it is in fact a dream and force yourself to wake up? I can sometimes, or at least that's what it feels like to me.

I wake myself out of dreams all the time. The most scary ones for me, and thats why they're nightmares is when I can't wake myself up, or I can't "fly" out of the dream from the bad guy!

Sleep paralysis really sucks. For the people who who get it, you should read up on it. There have been some very interesting papers written on the subject.

I get that time to time. I kind of learned how to fight it when it does happen.

Can you suggest any specific papers???

Has anyone had a lucid dream?

They're the kind where you can control everything that happens in them. I used to have them when I was younger they were pretty cool!

Sign me up!

(for a few nightmarish dreams, haven't had one in years)

I've had that happen a couple of times, though not with the sense of impending doom or the inability to breathe that most people seem to get. When it happens to me I'm just acutely aware of the fact that I can't get up and either can't see or can't open my eyes, which was a little scary the first time but now is just very very strange.

Ironically, though, those few episodes of sleep paralysis were a major catalyst for lucid dreams, so it doesn't completely suck. Since sleep paralysis is essentially the same paralysis that happens in REM sleep, it was easier - at least for me - to remember that sensation once it had happened in a waking state and recognize it in my sleep (particularly during a nightmare).

hahaha I've been having this happen to me for years now. The worst episode was when I had my face in another pillow and couldn't move. I thought I was gonna suffocate and was afraid to go back to sleep afterwords. Needless to say I no longer sleep with two pillows. That episode was just plain freaky.

Has anyone else been dreaming or having a nightmare and realized it while it was occurring? I was having a nightmare when I was younger (Night of the Living Dead) and when I was about to die I realized I was dreaming. I could then control my dream and all of a sudden I had super powers and was kicking zombie ass! Ever since then during some random dream I’ll realize I’m dreaming and be able to control that dream. Is this weird? Has anyone else had this happen to them?

That is so awful, im so sorry.

I cant believe you actually die in your dreams, shocking. I've always heard that it's impossible to die in your dreams because it would mean you've died in reality aswell. Weird, must be some urban myth i've been believing for years.

Also, unlike most who have posted I seem to dream most when I am relaxed and at ease with my life. When Im stressed I just pass out and don't dream at all.

I'm pretty sure that is just an old wives tale... but come to think of it all the nightmares i have where i'm the one in trouble i can't seem to remember one where i can actually see myself dead.... just like dying i guess... appearently it just means your subconcious is having a hard time.. makes sense since i usually have the nightmares when i'm having like an emotional time or somthing

thanks for your concern though!!
