I just upgraded my computer to an Athlon XP 3700 (long overdue) - and made the transition to WinXP from Win2k - so far it's ok - however, there were a couple of things I had to change right away cuz they bugged me.

1) The annoying sound made whenever I clicked on a link - WTF!

Disable: System->Control Panel->Sound and Audio Device properties->Windows Explorer->Start Navigation->None

2) The fading in of the Start menu/other menus

Disable: System->Control Panel->Display->Appearance->Effects->Use the following transition effect for menus and tooltips->Uncheck
Sunsnail
windows key + D = Go to desktop
windows key + L = Lock computer

Try a shell program like Aston or Window Blinds
Psygnosis
Probably this would be a nice site for the tips

Here

And yeh, first thing you should do is change that awful look hehe, go to www.wincustomize.com and get a new look for your pc, you can even give it effects like closing windows and opening, where you would get some nice effects.

Also you can change your logos, which you can make your XP look alot more good looking.

If you have professional edition (and if you don't, kick yourself) you can go to gpedit.msc and play with a large list of administrative options which can enhance security, resource efficiency, or just customize the shell in some ways that would otherwise require a third-party program. I've made way too many changes there to list them, so I suggest you just check it out if you haven't already.

If you want to be able to search through your temporary internet files with windows search, you can go into your temporary internet files and edit any desktop.ini files that you find there (make sure all hidden and protected system files are visible). They should all contain something like:

quote:
[.ShellClassInfo]
UICLSID={7BD29E00-76C1-11CF-9DD0-00A0C9034933}

Delete the UICLSID entry, but leave the file and the first line intact. Now you should be able to search through those directories just like anywhere else.

Get autopatcher xp, it save time and time after you do fresh install. It include tweaks and critical patches all in one

Also recommend tweakXP, Klite mega codec, daemon tool, and classic theme with no frills enhancements

Remove Unused Device Drivers

1. Press [Windows]+[Break] to bring up the System Properties dialog box.
2. Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
3. Click the New button below the System Variables panel.
4. In the New System Variable dialog box, type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in the Variable Name text box and 1 in the Variable Value text box.
5. Click OK to return to the System Properties dialog box and then click OK again.
6. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
7. In Device Manager, go to View | Show Hidden Devices.
8. Expand the various branches in the device tree and look for the washed out icons, which indicate unused device drivers.
9. To remove an unused device driver, right-click the icon and select Uninstall.

...voila major system improvement.

* this may be old news to some. it's old to me, but i see many people who do not know about this. it seems some major anti-spyware progs don't catch this. i sometimes see hijackthis! catch this sometimes .

as everyone knows , spyware loves to hide in the usual HKCU and HKCM trees , usually building automatic run commands under Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run(or RunOnce) .

now, it seems spyware is installing inside HK_USERS/.DEFAULT/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run . It's a no duh to check your msconfig , but to kill those pesky lines that you don't want anymore, they may pop at this path .

* and of course the most awesome [SHIFT]+[PRINT SCREEN] for post your desktops. hahaha . if you want to screen shot just the current window you have open, [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[PRINT SCREEN]

* just learned earlier that [SHIFT] + [F10] = right click. FTW

* hackzorz your Recycle Bin by messing with the c:\Recycled directory. You will see the folder when you uncheck the "hidden files and folders" option under folder options.

* and #1 -- windows XP home edition os + networking = FTL . i have tried all the tricks, turned off all the firewalls, messed with my registry, and even did the hokey pokey. my computer still does not want to act correctly inside a network, and share files appropriately. :-( . i am just too lazy to upgrade my computer to pro edition.

* and for those who are still using the ancient, but still useful, FAT32 system. you can upgrade to a NTFS without losing your data. However, you cannot downgrade back to FAT after that. go to the command prompt ( or i think it is available for use under Disk Management in MMC ) and type convert volume /FS:NTFS [/V]
