Get rid of those annoying Windows Updates prompting you with a countown and asking you if you want to reboot 'now' or 'later' (or if you're away from the computer tough it'll reboot anyways)

Start->Run->gpedit.msc

Local Computer - Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Windows Update - No Auto Restart for Automatic Updates

Default setting is Not Configured. Change to Enable.

Go to Neowin.com and check out their Windows customization tools. You need ResHack (which edits OS files) and Replacer (which backs up and copies over the system file of choice).

You'll DL a patched version of UXTheme.dll, and that will allow you to use custom themes, which you can then DL on Deviantart.com, or even on Neowin.

Powertoys TweakUI FTW! I forget with I've configured on there - no recycle bin on Desktop, none of that extra bull on my right-click file menu, a few other things.

A quick way to Task Manager is CTRL-SHIFT-ESC

Create a text file (mine is stuff.txt) on your Desktop to jot down notes and stuff. Most things you write down on sticky notes either get lost, or you have to use them in a doc or e-mail anyways. Once a portion gets too big, you might give it a separate document.

definitely use Run > msconfig > startup > and unhook whatever programs you dont want to boot up.. such as limewire, nero..

I would reccomend tgtsoft.com (stylexp) for visual styles. I like it more that windowsblinds.

and if you want a faster CPU just OC it
:whip:

EDIT: Run > Notepad. so good

Isn't it better just turning off the damn updates instead? Do we really need those updates?

A Work Around To Deleting Those 'Program Files' Folders
DISCLAIMER: The following steps apply only to intermediate and higher skilled pc users who have completely updated to Windows XP SP2.
Sometimes when you uninstall a program the folder is still present in your 'Program Files' directory. When you try to manually delete it, an error message pops up saying that the folder is being used by another program when clearly no such program exists. The reason behind this is because of a security feature that prevents amateur users from deleting files that they have no idea about. To work around this issue you need 2 things:

Ingredients:
-Hex Editor (it's a program that allows you to edit codes in hexadecimal format. The WinXP disk does not have this program therefore you must google this and look for freeware programs)
- Windows Recovery Console (it's a program located on your WinXP disk)

Steps:
    1)Before you begin make sure you have:
  • All Hidden Files & Folders enabled. To make sure this feature is enabled open any window and go to 'Tools', then go to 'Folder Options' and click the 'View' tab located on the top of that window. Make sure that these 2 options look just like this:

  • Hex editor and Windows Recovery Console installed. To check whether or not you have Recovery Console installed go to your C:\ drive main root and check for the 'Cmdcons' folder and the 'Cmldr' file. If those files are present skip to step 3. If not then you need to install the Recovery Console so refer to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307654

    2)Locate C:\Windows\system32\sfc_os.dll and copy it to the same
    folder and rename it to sfc_os1.dll

    3)Open the sfc_os1.dll in a hex editor and locate offset
    0xECE9 (or just ECE9) and change the the value(s) 33C040 to
    909090. Save changes and exit the program.

    4)Restart the computer in Windows Recovery Console mode. Once
    in this DOS-like state, make sure you are in the system32
    directory by typing ---> cd C:\windows\system32

    5)Now that you're in system32 directory
    type ---> erase sfc_os.dll
    Then press Enter button.
    Now type ---> ren sfc_os1.dll sfc_os.dll
    Then press Enter button.
    Finally type ---> copy sfc_os.dll C:\windows\system32\dllcache
    If prompted to overwrite, say yes.

    6)Reboot in normal mode.

    7)Open Registry Editor and find the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\currentVersion\Winlogon
    Find and doulbe click ---> SFCDisable
    Set the Vaule Data to ---> ffffff9d

    8)Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

That's it!!!

F11 changes browsers to fullscreen

a related question, I have xp2 with the grey taskbar and green start button. Under display properties/appearance/colour scheme there are only 3 options. Is it possible to get more options without installing third party software?
