The Great British Public

As a retail assistant for WHSmith I get the delightful pleasure of meeting hundreds of members of the great British public everyday. My question is why are so many people so ing misirable?! I don't like to moan but a lot people I serve look so gloomy and rarely bother to say please or thankyou or at best just grunt at you. Does anyone else in this industry get this or is it just me?

its maybe because buying stuff at a checkout is about as mundane as it gets. its just a process you have to go through, and an annoying one at that, to get something you want. please and thankyou are a must though. i used to hate that when i worked at a till.

there either gloomy or just so plain arrogant,

i decided to walk to town one day instead of driving, and i was passing through littlewoods, and there were 2 elderly people standing infront of the doorway, i polietly said excuse me, they just glared at me and tutted,
oh was it because im ing young or something.

Or some people they take up the whole pavement, expecting 'you' to move for them! sod that!

Or those twatty motorists, who dont acknowledge you, when you give way to them.....:whip:

rant over!

Worst WHSmiths I have been to was Waterloo on Tuesday afternoon. There you get disgruntled yanks asking the people to open more and more tills. But then the staff were just stupid saying "He dont want to! haw haw haw!"

Oh dear God

working at tesco for 2 and a half years gives you a sense of pity for the poor unfortunate souls who have to work in retail, especially ones on checkouts. therefore i always make sure to say please and thank you, its the least you can do.

i wouldnt worry about it in general though, majority of people are twats, no helping that.

I was brought up to say please and thankyou, and as extra,I do because I know the people working are at work, and because I am not,I feel pity for them,I know I hate working,so anythign I can do that doesn't take much effort I will do.

that I hate the happy happy ******s. What are they happy about? "Hi how are you????" when they actually don't give a . em.

I used to work in safeways (good times, who gives a if you get sacked?). I used to call the people who'd be working there all their life, "lifers". Not their face mind. But imagine doing that all your life?

I worked in Waitrose in my gap year, and it's just depressing. I've also worked there the past two summers, and it's simply icnredible to watch how some customers can be. As has already been said before, have they nothing better to do.

Whilst service in America may be fake, at least they're happy and smiley when they serve you, or vice versa. At least they're not as miserable as the British public tend to be.
