Putin's Hamas overture provokes storm of outrage from Israel
By Anne Penketh and Eric Silver in Jerusalem
Published:_11 February 2006

President Vladimir Putin's attempt to place Russia at the heart of the Middle East peace process by inviting Hamas leaders to Moscow for talks has provoked surprise in Europe and alarm in Israel.
Mr Putin broke ranks on Thursday with the other members of the international quartet - the US, EU and UN - by announcing the invitation to Hamas, officially designated as a terrorist organisation by the Americans. Mr Putin said that Russia had never considered Hamas to be terrorists. The Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Ivanov, predicted that "sometime in the future, many leading states will start maintaining some contacts with Hamas". Although Russia is a member of the quartet, which, last week in London, carefully co-ordinated its response to the shock Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections, the Kremlin has been marginalised in the Middle East peace process for more than a decade.
The quartet warned the suicide bombers of Hamas last week that all members of a future Palestinian government must be committed to "non-violence" and the recognition of Israel.
Diplomats said that the British Government had not been forewarned of the Russian overture to Hamas, although they stressed that it was too early to say whether the move marked a major shift in policy. France did not object, so long as agreed "objectives and principles" were observed.
But the reaction in Israel was sharp: "It's not just a slap in the face to Israel. It's a slap in the face to Western countries," said one Israeli official.

I wonder what Putin expects to gain from this move? Previously this week he also condemned the Satanic Cartoons, clearly aligning himself with radical Islam. It seems odd at a time when he's still fighting in Chechnya.:conf:

Putin's mentality is just to side against the West, no matter what. It has nothing to do with Islam or anything of that nature. If it was the West against penguins that cretin would declare that he's the defender of all penguins.

Wait... wait
PUTIN? The same man who ordered the murder of the Chechen president?
LOL
He has no right to be saying anything about terrorism. He's a twat.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the Chechans were found to have links with Hamas.

Reminds me of what one of the Israeli minister's said in a reaction statement about Putin inviting Hamas... something along the lines of "How would he feel if we invited Chechen leaders to Jerusalem?" :D They totally should ... lol... I mean I know they won't but still... I remember when Putin got mad over ABC doing an interview with a Chechen rebel leader... we're not talking high-level political talks but a freaking TV interview!!! Naw, no double-standard there... :toothless

What the makes you think I'd want him to win? Not to mention the fact that anyone not brainwashed by the Russian gov't or gov't owned media knows that he's a thief and a criminal who did time. If I was in the Ukraine at that time (something I was planning on doing) I would be in the square in that weather protesting that twat.

that would be an interesting situation, but to my knowledge the Chechen leaders wouldn't come - there is alot of mutual sympathy between the Palestinians and the Chechens because they see their plight against Israel and Russia as very similar. Many Islamic extreemists (or freedom fighters?) from around the middle east have joined the Chechens in their battle against occupation and any dialog between the Chechen leaders and Israel would sow a great deal of discord among their ranks

Me too.

I would have thrown the egg, as well.
