| I don't know how many of you here like Oakenfold and if you listen to his new stuff I can't really blame you. I love his old stuff and his old CDs. But now he is going commercial. IT SUX. I wish he would go back to playing the good stuff like Tranceport and New York. They were the days. None of this Ice Cube commercial stuff!! |

Hmm interesting. I agree, he isn't one of the more sougt after dj's since theres armin, tiesto, ferry corsten, and PvD.
I wonder why people still pay him thousands of dollars to spin when theres better djs out there then him.
maybe its a brand name kinda thing?
You pay more for brand name even though the quality isn't all there anymore. |

Yeah, I agree with you guys.. His live presentations are not the same great stuff that made he be considered the best dj of the world some years ago.. I think PvD has been doing a better job nowadays.. |

I'm sorry but I have NEVER liked Oakenfold. Aside from one or two of his productions I've hoenstly never had much good to say about him. Saw him perform livetwo or three years back and his mixing was definately not so good and his track selection wasn't even that exciting.
He is commercial. Which is partially understandable b/c he wants to make money but he sold out a long time ago to that yet everyone still LOVES him. I cringe at his name and dont' understand the goodness of what anyone see's/hear's. |

| losing his touch, i definitley agree... when i listen to his older cd's and especially his essential mixes from his EM tour and etc, all i can say is WOW... his last EM restored some confidence in him that i had lost, but even then... his older stuff is so awesome ... sigh.. |

I began listening to trance with oakey. There's the first hint: a popular DJ in America. (read: commercial trends) His stuff in late 90's early 00's was great, Ibiza, NY, Tranceport... anyways, as time goes on his albums, still OK, are losing their spunk. I think hes just riding out his reputation. People will listen because he is the fabled PAUL OAKENFOLD.
Another example: My friend Brian just made it apprent to me that he liked trance, so I whipped together a folder of cds, maybe 50 or so, that he could copy over the weekend and have a respectable, diverse collection. Later in the day he said to me, "I was lookin through those CDs and saw Oakenfold and I almost died!" Its funny how that name has so much power, plus there was some goo d in there, AvB, Sasha+Digweed, BT, Sasha... Anyways, my point is this: Oakenfold is still a good DJ, but he dosnt have to work hard any more, hes built his name up so much now that people who dont even listen to trance (or even electronic music for that matter) think that hes good.
Or maybe he is just trying to open up people here to trance.. I saw him this summer spin and his set was not very impressive. It seemed more like a club night than anything, he spun tunes people would know from the likes of Prodigy, PvD, and Himself, but no really great new stuff like what we listen to here.... Who knows, but I do agree that hes going downhill.
Cheers,

yep..year and half ago for his essential mixes! :D
and sorry but I still like Oakey cuz he was the first DJ that really got me hooked into trance (from a DJ perspective ofcourse).
True that the past year from him has been crap...but wouldn't go as far as two years like most of you have said.
Will alwayz give him respect due to the influence he had -- musically -- on moi. |

He could make his music get back on the best level once again.
I think his old CDs like Tranceport, New York(possibly one of the best CDs ever), Resident, Oslo are absolutely fabulous!! Thats not what Im concerned about. I would love it if he went back to the good stuff. Back to Acid House, Funky Trance and more cool breaks and LOTS OF WHITE LABELS!! That is his problem now. All hid new CDs contain no white label songs. :( Everything has already been released and is already popular. Even his old live mixes and old EMs were full of white labels. Now it is al the same stuff(eg. PPK - Resurection) Please Paul go back to the good old days!! |
