Aria: fallen off the map for techno completely?! (pg. 7)

Malek, I don't know since how long you are in the Montreal clubbing and rave scene but... Before, there was parties every week, people used to dress like ravers. Now there is 2-3 parties a year. Cream used to be a 10 000 people party and now there is no more party.
Bal en Blanc is doing good because there is a party atmosphere and because it's really commercial.
People from Montreal approched GK to come here because they can't do parties anymore in Toronto. I don't think they will last so long here also.
Wich club is doing house music night and doing so good in the city?
Wich club is doing techno?
Please, do not drop name like Parking (this is a gay club and totally different, fridays & saturdays are men only).

Upper Club??? This is a 150 people club capacity that is really pack 15 times a year, wow! I will not blame them, at least they try.

Jean-Fred you definitely booked many techno DJs in the past and I happily attended many of those nights. Just because it’s a techno booking though doesn’t mean I necessarily liked it, I can think of enough occasions where I thought the DJ seemed to be having an off night compared to other times I have seen him, as well as DJs that I thought shouldn’t have been booked in the first place. At the end of the day, I try to do what I can to promote the music and the nights where you have booked some techno and be positive about it!

I’m not going to bother trying to point out which events I felt were ‘good’ musically and which ones were ‘bad’, because that is very subjective anyway and your opinion doesn’t carry all that much weight with me.

Finally, we have to world reknowed frontier-pushing festival known as Mutek and Elektra.

I know people in TO talk about Mutek almost as much as they talk about DEMF. However, I'm guessing that's not the type of techno Kate started this thread about.

We're only in March and Aria has brought Mauro Picotto and Loco Dice, two big techno names - and while neither are my favorites, I can at least give aria some credit for bringing them in.

It sucks when people are stuck on how things used to be - it doesn't help anything move forwards.

Some of the parties you were reffering to as in the past, went bankrupt because of a good and healthy competition by afterhours in Montréal and Aria of course. But there still many "raves" going on that are not talked about here on this site, there's a good listing of them on rave.ca

Some solid nights have been popping up in the last few years, namely at Time, Central from time to time, Living, now Myst is doing good, some good events at SAT, etc etc etc my head is about to explode, i don't feel like naming a load of clubs.

GK being aprochaed or not, they still put some big money in their last two events... if they didn't believe in the market they wouldn't put a single penny. Money isn't free.

Skipper: Mutek and Elektra are not dance events, but their mission is to push the boundaries of electronic music, transforming and pushing the genres to create new sounds and inspire djs and producers. In my opinioin they're as important and maybe more as large events here in Montréal.
Mekroon
le central c toujours le party
vendredi & samedi
i dont go to afterhours anymore cause its way too late
alcohol brings a better vibe than pillz
we need clubs to widen their music styles
people need to learn about what is electronic music
since it seems to be hidden to the mass, apart from house
i dont care about how it cant work
in europe the scene is damn more impressive

I'm aware of what they are - I'm just saying that Mutek is an event that is talked about here in TO. It is definitely something that puts Montreal on the map. Same with some of the events that have been held at the SAT in the last few years.

You guys think you have it bad in MTL? Imagine loving Techno and being here in Toronto.:(

Sure, as Sarah points out.. there are smaller, hidden venues that are pumping out the sounds both in Toronto and MTL.. but I find Toronto(since I live here) is run by a monopoly of people...and if you're not known by any of these select few... u're an OUTSIDER...and feel weird, even simply attending one of these intimate parties. Everyone there seems to know each other.

People group together like schoolyard children and it makes the scene ..real unaccepting. This is what I've noticed here in Toronto. Even going as far as not too book dj's who spin in a certain venue that is not one of theirs. You virtually get 'blasklisted'..from them.

I remember when MTL "was" the place for Techno in Canada... and I also remembe talking to Louis about this very thing not too long ago..and he told me that it was on a decline in the city. Came as a big shock to me.

House is the grandaddy of EDM and will always be around.. i'm positive. Everything has it's time. Techno's will come soon .. again. Hopefully... it'll make big moves in Toronto.

Central Station is a very commercial venue and they play hip-hop alot (Time and Myst are restaurants, there is no dancefloor).

SAT = société des arts technologiques. Ce n'est pas un club.

Now, do you want me to start naming new hip-hop clubs, that are huge and pack every friday and saturday? There is 10 times more hip-hop clubs than before. On St-Laurent, people used to have house music, now it's hip-hop!

Malek, tu t'amuses à dire le contraire de tout ce que je dis ou quoi?
De nos jours, it's all about hip-hop.

Skipper: Mutek is way bigger than people over here know about, its reknowed all over, they're even now making parallele festivals in south america...
