Ok so NYC has to be the mecca of every global institution (financially atleast), with a melting pot of MILLIONS IN POPULATION, yet so far behind in extreme engineering? Don't think something like this would net MILLIONS if it were built somewhere accessible to the city?
DISCUSS |
A couple of ideas why it hasn't been done:
1. Japan's populations density >> the USA's population density. Even considering that NYC is densly populated, the problem is that there may still not be enough people to draw into this place to make it profitable.
1a. cost of building space: If it was indeed near NYC, it'd be very expensive to build, just from a property value perspective.
2. Energy cost: there is tons of oil in the middle east, hence they could care less about wasting a couple of MW on artificially cooling down the desert. While energy costs in the US are lower than in many other countries, they may still be prohibitively high for a year-round beach/ winter resort.
3. Consider that the people in the UAE have more moeny than they know what to do with, so the cost of capital for the people who built/ financed the skiing thing is low, which ma make it a worthwhile investment there, but not in the USA.
4. Location: In NYC you can 'easily' go to the beach or Skiing, but the latter is rather hard in the UAE.

LOL
This in NYC?
Hopefully there would be a fee to pay to get in, so the SCUM doesnt get in there. |

| Don't you guys think you should worry about the olympics first? With all those stadiums i'm sure you will have enough open space to build something crazy that us upstaters will have to pay for(besides welfare). |

| I would rather go to a real beach rather than some imitation beach - especially in NYC. Lets be real, people here dont embrace anything they are given, they take advantage of it as if they are obligated to have it and ruin it. |

jones beach? sorry don't like the feeling of glass shards hitting my legs when the waves come in. nor do i like the mass amounts of seaweed floating out by lido beach either...
maybe i should drive to jersey shore and hang with the guidettes?
or
rockaway beach and find some used needles to lay on?

glad you feel your comment is the only legitmate comment to warrant an end of discussion. seems pretty close minded to me....
and you ask why so many people are against you and hate on you for considering avb is the greatest dj etc etc...open your mind fool, there's other out there besides AVB, Clubbing, and Trance...ya know reality and stuff....we have personalities too, we aren't just club sluts

I think I need to circle back to the original topic, it's not the fact that we don't have beaches or ski resorts, but the convenience of having one located within the metro area as an advancement in technology/engineering. We are certainly capable of doing so if india and japan are.
There have been some legitmate opinions here (jets stadium, power/electricity), but lets be realistic about it, I'm not saying we'll need 400 acres of land to build triple black diamonds or "ride the big one" pools generating 15foot waves, i'm stating we should build something relevant to a "Chelsea Piers" but catering to extreme sports such as moto cross, snowboard parks, surf parks, etc. I think everyone got so caught up in stating why it won't work because they see the intention of a large scale multi-billion installments. I'm talking about the space located on the UWS (riverside in the 100s), there's a skate park there with a half pipe, ramps, jumps, etc which is NOW CLOSED. take the same technology india has used, close it up add some airconditioners and start blowing snow.
Did you know that there is an outdoor pool up by the GW? ran by the parks department with a full roof covering to shelter it but it still remains open air. I mean come on, such a big city with so many attractions. I think we should step it up and move outside of the "city life" and introduce a more diverse selection of sports. |

It would be cool in theory but,
Building something like that is quite expensive. And it would obv cost a lot more to make something like that around nyc then in Japan. Also I couldn't even imagine the work that would have to be put into it to keep it maintained.
It seemed hard enough for the Yankees to okay a new stadium. The Jets couldn't get one in Manhattan despite buying the train yards.
NYC seems to have bigger issues such as schooling & all that other stuff people wine that there isn't a big enough budget and its a waste to spend money any where else. |

| completely legitmate - its true this city faces bigger issues other than having another form of entertainment! I'm just saying people pour millions into clubs, businesses, theaters, etc...why not pour the same millions into something specific, unordinary, just DIFFERENT...i'm sure it'll be easy to maintain as well as keep a sufficient overhead. i don't know, maybe i just dislike the "regular thing to do"...it's nice to be different |
