What is Trance, to you? (pg. 5)

I know we've gotten into discussions like this before, thats why I was trying to resist on this one. But you guys just need to respect that some people have feelings for music that goes beyond just listening to it for the sake of listening to it. It's not something to argue about, just for you guys to at least understand. That doesn't mean you have to feel for it or feel it has meaning, but some people, like myself, don't just sit there and listen passively to music and don't expect to get anything out of it, subjectively speaking (music means something different to other people, so if it means nothing to you, and is just simplistic dance music, then fine, I respect that).

The classical and romantic composers of the 18th and 19th centuries (i'm in an "understanding music" class right now) felt pretty profoundly about the music they composed...and so did the listeners, so I could see the same for trance, being instrumental and highly compositional and emotional (more so then say techno or some house) can't be thought of in the same way in the 21st century. Rock songs mean stuff to people, so do pop songs, but I guess it's harder for people nowadays to feel something for instrumental music...That doesn't mean you can't just have fun and listen to it, I do that, and have for years, but sometimes it's nice to at least express yourself about the music, then just listen to it. But again, maybe some people don't like the beautiful melodies or breakdowns in trance (And i'm not saying I whore those, I still like melodies, and the occasional breakdown, but I said early and still say I don't like the predictable breakdowns as much, esp with "trance riffs").

Some people like the really hard or techy or psy stuff, which doesn't have as much "feeling" or "meaning" because it's not supposed to, it's just dance and party stuff. I don't think that stuff is made to take itself super seriously, but I think some of the more beautiful and melodic stuff are, just as classical and romantic songs were. Just understand what people like me are at least trying to say, rather than right us off as just "taking it too seriously" because well...sometimes it's nice to take something you are passionate about seriously. Basketball players have fun playing, but they also take it seriously. Same with trance music, either listening, dancing or producing and mixing. Have fun with it, and also take it seriously, unless you just don't like it or really have a passion for it.

But it is just the fact that the majority of this type of talk comes across as being very sappy and shallow, and pop-tarty as well (no matter who the person is), which ultimately feels quite pretentious and fake in my opinion... and I just really have to sit back and have myself a good laugh at some of this because it is JUST MUSIC, not the second coming of the heavens like trance music is made out to be by the fans. Look, I am NOT trying to refute your genuine interest or feelings towards the music, I just think it is very much over-exaggerated to be so gitty, almost like how a teenage girl would get all flustered at a Backstreet Boys concert. That is honestly how I view some of these threads (and the whole trance scene for that matter), and I really can't help but wonder somewhat because of that.

You know, I'm probably just as passionate about music as you, and I know I have my own personal feelings as well, but you can most certainly feel that way without coming across as being a sap-happy pre-teen like many people do.

^^i wanted to say that but couldn't find the words, nice one ;) ...pretty much sums up why threads like this annoy me despite me liking trance & being capable of experiencing similar feelings to the posters in question

Nah, not really. I'm simply speaking in general terms about the trance scene, but if you say you don't make (or take) trance that seriously, then congrats to you.

There's so many different types of trance music, and not many of them are actually "trancey", saying that, Flaming June by BT is just an awesome song and probably defines it for me along with other popular trance tunes Paul Van Dyk etc. Just hearing the odd classic on the radio when i was a youngster and humming along.

Nowadays I like a some of Marco V's stuff and some mad Techno!
