Every time I download a file from ANY file-sharing service, the filenames are in an unacceptable format in my book. First, I HATE lowercases where there should be uppers. Next, UNDERSCORES! Who likes them? Next here's my format for singles: Artist - Title (Remix)
For live sets this is the format: Artist - Live at (event) on (date in YYYY-MM-DD format). So, here's an example of a real filename: Rank 1 - Live at Trance Energy on 2000-09-30
I use Year/Month/Day format for ALL short dates because it's good for organising (In China, Korea, and Japan they use it as their standard format so, I'm not alone). For oral expression I use Day/Month/Year format. So, I say: Today is the 30th of January, 2002. For ALL times I use 24 hour system (07:30 PM = 19:30). I hate it when Americans say "so you use "MILITARY TIME", eh?". That format isn't used ONLY for the military. In some countries, it's used on timetables, agendas, and in some places, everywhere time records are needed. Who would like to ask me questions on these formats? PM me or e-mail me. My ICQ # is 145283256 so, you can find me on there too... |

I even create sub-folders in my MP3 folder when I burn them to CD and put all the newly burned things into the sub-folder w/ the date they were burned as the folder name. |
i used to organise them by artists the changed it to sub genres but it annoyed me coz id have to look through a load of folders of remember which one i put it in so now i just have em as one big kaboodle |

I'm very strict when it comes to organizing my collection. The problem is that I don't bother with it until I've downloaded 3-4 gigs of the . Then I have to use hours organizing:D A pain in the arse..

hey smellsexcellent, thanx for reccomending mp3 tag studio. It's exactly what i needed, great program.
I have a question about mp3 tag studio. How do I space out the words of the song perfectly and remove the underscore? For example, I have song names and artist like this:
Britney_Spears- I'm a slave for you! :D
how do I make them look like this:
Britney Spears - I'm a slave for you! |

Just out of intrest? Whats the best thing to do if your are using a fiel sharing program?
Leave the filename and tags as they are?
OR
Change either the tags or filename
I ask this as id imagen some programs wouldnt pick up the differences etc?

Im not on my "downstairs computer" (the good one with all my apps) so i cant tell you for sure, but i know theres a "custom" option in the mass rename files tab where you can define custome rules such as "change all _ to ." I think though that there is a convert underscore option and even a %20 one (a different way of writing a space.) Either way, its a pretty simple program and im sure that youll figure it out eventually if not by now.
A quick question, I would like to remove all the tags on my livesets and albums, but in tag studio it goes VERY slow and eventually quits.. is there a good prog out there that can remove tags FAST fomr bigger files??? Thanks if you know.
Wow, im glad to hear that i dont have a problem. I wasnt surebecause i am the messiest, most unorganized person around and it just seemed odd that for this one thing i was insane about order.
BTW, Jon, Like i said, i rename all files and take out ID3 tags.. As far as AG goes, i have no idea how they catalogue stuff cuz whenever I share some of my productions theyre all messed up, the titles are not there or something in the () part where the remix should be is in the title... I dont know. but for DC its way beter to rename just for the sake of others who are browsking your files. eDonkey dosnt use either, they make some osrt of tag out of the waveform and then share it from that.... hope that helped some.
Cheers all

Another question, is there any "good" naming method for live sets and what the best way to show the date, because UK and the USA have dates wrote out different:
UK way dd/mm/yyyy
USA way mm/dd/yyyy

As I said before, the best way to do it is YEAR/MONTH/DAY. I NEVER use MM/DD/YYYY. I have no idea where did USA get that format from because DD/MM/YYYY makes the most sense (2nd OF February, 2002). In Japan, China, Korea, and ISO's standard, they do it like this: 2002 (YEAR SYMBOL) 02 (MONTH SYMBOL) 02 (DAY SYMBOL) and then the day of the week, in "()". Since I can't type those characters properly, I just use slashes for the symbols (2002/02/02 (Saturday)). |

Sounds like alot of us TAs are OCD about naming files a certain way. I doesnt explain it though... if most of use are anal about how we name files why are most files that I download needing to be renamed. I find it really time consuming...sometimes I get lazy, and dont bother to rename the file when I download it,.... and after a month, i have 200-300 files to rename, it takes me hours...
Also, does anyone know how I can convert a list of songs/files from Microsoft Explorer to a word processor or spreadsheet? I know that through Winamp you can make and HTML copy of your songs, but the songlist it makes is taken from the ID3 tags, and most of my songs have been archived on MP3 discs so I cant modify the tags anymore... any suggestions please PM me.... Thanks. |
