I'm probably guilty of socializing at work too much too.. but in some ways it's good cause it builds a good atmosphere at work :)
Moral Hazard
The universe is essentially lazy. Even electrons will naturally seek to use the least amount of energy possible, which is why their natural orbit is as close to the proton as possible without falling into it. Energy is a valuable commodity, almost every living thing endevors to expend as little of it as possible in completing it's required tasks.

as mentioned, ---> human nature

it doesn't matter how good or bad ppl have it, they will complain.

I used to work at the biggest whole the ran you like slave labour (only thing justifying it was the wage) due to cut backs, i got layed off, and found a job closer to home in the same industry. The wage is awesome (especially for a student) the job is rediculously easy, and on an 8 hr shift, most ppl get a total of 1.5-2hrs break within the day, and while working its very relaxed pace. But for the ppl that have been there so long, the littlest things are the biggest deal, and i'm just like, go to my last job before you start complaining.

Gossip and Complaining happen for one reasons...the average persons life is pretty boring, and becasue north america is infatuated with popular culture and the media, this is the only way they can add a level of 'excitment' in the work place.

IMO best type of workplace is place where you have to be held accountable. You slack off or you screw up, it'll bite you.

Like being a firefighter or an EMT. you slack off or you screw up, someone will definitely notice.

Humans always work better when there is a threat of someone who can light a fire under your ass.

Well said. That's the only way most students get anything done at school, and that is when I produce my best stuff as work.

Ofcourse that's to say reasonable accountability. In my case going from a department of 7 people down to 4, with no hirings, and work just being shifted on top of the last few remaining employees then really there is no case for accountability. How can these 4 be accountable for anything when they're so swamped? Ofcourse this is mostly managment error, but oddly enough you see this situation occuring in more and more places.

Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay on Compensation

we get what we deserve.

This is one of my favorite texts of all time (just found it online right now for you). This is my bible, and I try to re-read a few pages every night from his various essential writings for inspiration the next day.

That is IMO lack of proper supervision and leadership in your company's part. I don't mean supervising meaning ensuring work gets done, but also ensuring proper workload is given to employees for reasonable amount of time to complete them in and if it's not being done, steps being taken to fix the problem.
