I like Crobar and end up there a lot but haven't been to Spirit enough to compare.

Good: Bouncers, bathroooms, staff in genaral have been very nice.
Bad: Not enough seating. On a busy night, it takes ages to get from the floor to the bathroom. And by the time you get back and start dancing, you gotta start planning your next trip (I have a small bladder :)) After you've been there a while, there's no more room to explore and it gets too familiar.

I liked when they opened up the whole club for PvD last April. I found all these little corridors and corners, just chillin, talking to random people --- that how I like it.

I do like big clubs where it's easy to lose ones self.

crobar yays:
- lineups, lineups, lineups [which ultimately the most imp. "yay"]
- staff is almost always professional and courteous
- cavernous main room
- big plasma screens
- sound system has gotten better (and is getting a further improvement soon)
- drinks are usually pretty stiff

crobar nays:
- booth is a little too high
- lighting is hit-or-miss
- crowds are hit-or-miss
- lack of seating downstairs

I've both DJ-ed and attended parties at Crobar and Spirit. So, I've worked with the staff as well as been an patron.

Likes about Crobar:
1.) The lineups. I can almost depend on Crobar to have a great act almost every weekend, which is why I end up there almost every weekend, if I dont have a gig lined up.
2.) The Comps on Fri!! ;)
3.) Most of the time, the staff is very, very courteous. When I DJ-ed their before, everyone from the sound guy to the PR guy to the bartenders were incredibly down-to-earth and friendly.
4.) I like the big open spaces. More room to see more people. If you get bored of one area, you move on to the next.
5.) That tunnel is really cool! As is the lighting. I've never seen lighting like that in any other club in NYC.
6.) The nitrous drop they do for the big events is SICK!!
7.) Aesthetically, the club looks amazing! When they have special acts, they seem to spruce up the club with lights (Tiesto a few months back) and just add overall a new look to keep the place fresh.
8.) I love the sound. When I DJ-ed there, it was on the main floor and the sound guy let us create our own setup (i.e. letting us choose the equipment we would like to mix with and then actually providing us with it! That's a DJ's wet dream come true!!)

Dislikes about Crobar:
1.) The bathroom is really, really far!
2.) The bartenders can be dicks at times, but I was drunk, so they should've understood.
3.) You have to be nice to the staff, even if your drunk..otherwise, they'll make your life a living hell!

Likes about Spirit:
1.) Its pretty big.
2.) The sound is okay..the booth could use some work with better equipment. When I was there for Armin, the highs were making my ears bleed. At times, the sound just got really distorted and all I heard was bass. Idk, maybe I was just getting tired?
3.) The staff is really nice. Haven't ever had to deal with any drama from them.
4.) The crowd when I went was pretty young (18+), but it was still cool. Almost no fights and everyone seemed to be enjoying the night.
5.) Sitting area is a plus!

Dislikes about Spirit:
1.) Its not as big as Crobar (I mean the main room. I get bored pretty easily, so I like walking around and seeing new areas.
2.) Again, the sound could be tweaked a bit better.
3.) Aesthetically, the club is not as pleasing as Crobar.
4.) The poles in the middle of the floor suck. For some reason, I just dont like the idea of huge steel beams in the middle of the dance floor.

I like Spirit because of the talent they bring in. The smaller, darker atmosphere while producing great sound. The location of the bars, bathrooms, couches/seating. And the fact that I can go upstairs and hang out on the 2nd floor balcony when I get tired. And I love the overall crowd. I have met some very nice people at Spirit, even those I almost got into a fight with! :p

Crobar is a great club as well. I like going sometimes because it is a larger venue but I don't like the fact that the bar is pretty much a part of the dancefloor. It makes it VERY annoying trying to get a drink. I also think the sound could be better but I don't think it will ever be corrected because of the high ceilings and overall size of the place. I love the second room that has couches and allows you to chill out for a bit and be in a less crowded atmosphere while still hearing the dj's set through the speakers.

I have never really had a problem with bouncers, staff or bathroom attendants. Only one time I was filling my water bottle at Spirit and the guy said I wasn't allowed. I flipped and was like "Water is a necessity of life! You are denying me the right to live by not letting me fill up my bottle with water!" Yeah, I was kinda "outta my mind" at the time and a little out of line. He said if I continued he was getting security so I backed off. When I came back to go to the bathroom again I apologized and he pretty much told me not to sweat it and I could fill my bottle if I wanted. :D

All in all, I love NYC clubs! :gsmile:

CROBAR

likes:

  • the visual appearance of the club.
  • the size.
  • the staff.
  • the comps.
  • the lineups.
  • the decorations they do for each different event. (the huge white things for Ferry, the argentina stuff all over for Hernan, etc)

dislikes:

  • the crowd. (though i like this crowd better than spirit's)
  • the sound is not the greatest.
  • nowhere to sit

SPIRIT

likes:

  • you can sit down, if necessary.
  • it's one block closer to my parking spot than crobar is.

dislikes:

  • the sound. (i have walked out of there 2 or 3 times with the worst ringing ever in my ears)
  • the crowd. (18+...)
  • walking 8 miles to the bathroom.
  • that ty smoking area because that entire side of the club smells like smoke.
  • the lighting... or lack of. (i could turn on my winamp and turn off the lights in my room and be able to see better than in spirit)
  • the total tiness, looks wise, of the club, in general.

i've only been to spirit once for pvd's after party and don't have much to say. it was fine, and nice to close my eyes and pretend it was pvd in the middle of what used to be there... however it was just a shame to see such a small inexplosive venue in twilo's place.

as for crobar, the thing that used to be really cool there is that they always treated you really professionally like an important customer, and the doors used to be totally hassle free. this has changed a lot, the doors are not hassle free. they keep lines outsdie for show and aren't always as courteous and professional.

the pro is the design of the main room. it has a massive feel and i love the incredibly high ceiling and big club feel. i like the tunnel too. one thing wrong with that is the bar behind the floor wastes a ton of space that would make it more superclubbish and create more room to dance.

the sound system is hit or miss. it sounded really good for sasha and digweed, and has sounded pretty poor, or completely bassy in other events. the lights, i haev said time and time again are a freaking joke. they overdo the strobes a lot and they also light up the room with these lame colored lights that look like they were made for ty school plays. the only lights i like there are those hexagon or whatevr shaped LEDs... those are nice. the rest of them are all CRAP and such a joke for a such a big scale club.
put a ing permanenet laser in this club. they have so much space to work with. it would solve their ridiculous lighting issues. keep it dark with some lasers and the LEDs :)

the cryogenic thing or whatever is really good there. they haven't used it to white-out condition forever (cheap bastards), which is how its really aewsome to experience.

also, the last two times i walked in i was stampeded by two bouncers beating the out of and removing someone from the club. that is not a pleasant welcome, lol.
