wait.. remember there are alot of galaxies and in those galaxies there are solar systems.. there are more planets then all those 0's in the visible universe I THINK!
remember there is also the universe that isnt observable which contains much more tha we dont know about. Scientist consider this inconsequential though since if you cant see it.. it doesnt matter. So the question is.. is there life nearby? maybe. We need to do more exploration to get these estimates more accurate and more variables defined |
That was a lot of zeros :)
10^66 I think. Let's make an estimate for the number of stars...
visible universe^radius = 15 billion light years. what can the mean distance betwenn galaxies be? a million light years maybe? don't know for sure. so around 10 000 galaxies wide. to the power of three to get the volume --> 10^12 galaxies. and around 100 million stars in each galxy --> around 10^20 stars.
In any way a lot less than 10^66 :)
But I agree with you. Resent measurements (accelerating universe) implies that the universe is (spatially) infinite --> infinitely many stars. If we then take a purely atheistic approach (no god, no "fate", just random) there will for sure be life somewhere else, by the above "can it happen once can it happen twice" argument.
Then I do not believe we will see any of this life in a while. But it would be funny.
EDIT: actually there is an exact copy of our earth somewhere out there. ;) |

ok, independence day tries to be a bit more realsitic. Only this idea with the american president saving the world etc that makes me a bit sick. But otherwise it may be a guess as good as any at how the aliens are...
I for one don't have a clue. |
