the bottom line is George Carlin's Rule : "90% of everything is ." 9/10 people are ty, 1/10 golden. 90% of rock is , 90% of jazz is , 90% of techno is , 90% of visual art is , etc
It is a fundamental law of nature. Always has been, always will be. There is nothing like good trance, never has been. And there will always be good trance, 10% anyway. |

3D World magazine? What issue?
I've read the latest issue at work and didn't come across anything EDM related. |
Full interview here (Dunno why this interview wasn't linked to in its entirety)
As has been mentioned in other threads - the 'Trance' of today is not the same as the epic stuff of old - there are some similar elements but more layers of complexity - so much so that the crossover with breaks/house/techy sounds is obvious and tracks can no longer be described as simply Trance.
The amount of cookie-cutter productions from amateurs trying to cash in on the old Trance sound resulted in a backlash of Trance being fluffy and formulaic -- pushing producers towards marketing their track as something different than what it is - simply to not be thrown into the same pile of as lots of the Trance out there.
Also, some producers (that have already built a name for themselves with past work) like to turn out mediocre tracks and distribute them amongst the elite knowing that it will get attention regardless. This is one of my major pet peeves - tracks that get attention by whose name is on them rather than its production quality. |

the whole idea of progressive is that it changes all the time, that's what gives it its name. Sure many of the big name djs' who used to play progtrance have moved on, but believe me there is a TON of good stuff out there, some of it crossover to prog-house or whatever, but it all works. Anybody who disagrees needs to look at some of the following artists
Ticon
Vibrasphere
Human Blue
SBK
Tegma
D-Nox & Beckers
Antix
Atmos
Freq
Flowjob
B.L.T.
Flash Brothers
Human Traffic
Son Kite
Shiloh
The stuff is there to be found, It might not jump straight out at you, but for me & many others, the fact there's these artists away from the mainstream trance djs at least gives us a hope for the future. |
Producers like these give me assurance that no matter what anyone says, trance is not dead. |

wow... i find it amazing that there's 7 pages of comments about this topic. of course 95% of trance is cheesy stuff... but who cares. its just harder to pick out the trax and sets i like, while weeding out the crap (or what i consider crap).

I actually think it's alright for PvD to be saying this. Yeh, some of his stuff fits the bill, but then, if you consider that, if not 95%, then 90% of trance is , he's doing pretty well for the numbers. A lot of his earlier stuff wasn't bad, and there's still some reason stuff that I've really enjoyed. Once you look past the abuse of breakdowns which several of the best artists suffer from (Sasha, BT, etc.), he's actually got a pretty good thing going.
I can't say much about his DJing, though, as I haven't listened to too many of his sets.
I think it's very interesting to hear the current #1 DJ saying something like this. On the one hand, it's almost like he doesn't want the number one spot. On the other, this could do even more for his popularity. Especially if he backs it up with more good music than he's had lately. |

PvD is an idiot for bashing trance and then going ahead and playing it in his sets. Maybe this is why I've stopped going to his shows. Yeah, thanks Paul... I really loving being lifted up into the clouds by you hammering out 4 awesome trance tracks in a row and then slamming down a cheesey house tune just because you think trance is bullocks. If this is your reasoning for destroying a vibe you created on the dancefloor then please just quit while you are still ahead.
Edit: And yeah, I have never seen anything like it. How a club can go completely crazy over what is a great set and then come to a complete stand still because the dj decided to throw in one of his OWN "cookie cutter" tracks. |
