Trips to the US Consulate in Juarez, Mexico aren't cheap. Every time he went, he spent nearly $7000. That's $14,000 in two years. That includes lawyer fees, transportation, the whole works. Most people can't afford that. So what do they do? They come here, work illegally, save money, and then apply.

That is a ton of money, 10+ years, just for a greencard. I had no idea it took that long.:eyespop: Does the US give out temporary work permits and things? Personally I have never heard of em' here in the US, but maybe that might be a better solution as far as documentation goes. If they were cheap and easy to get, it might help.

just so people understand it takes mexicans and a lot of central americans 10yrs not people from countries that migrate here legally. the reason for that is because mexicans can just hop the border. someone from chile or argentina spends 10x the amount to get to the border so its cheaper to just do it legally. coming from sacramento i have lots of russian friends, sac is the largest single location of russians in the usa, they have gone through the process and it really only takes 2-3 years if you arent from a central american country. an old friend of mine in HS was fron chile it took his parents 3yrs to get to the states. it all depends upon where you are from.

They used to. Actually they still do for high end jobs, but not for strawberry pickers or toilet cleners. That's what Bush's proposal is... is a GUEST WORKER. Under his proposal, illegal immigrants would get a GUEST WORKER visa for a certain amount of time, and then they should be able to apply for a more permanent one. That's what people are not understanding.

If the immigrants get legal visas, it will relive a lot of pressure from authorities, save tons of money, and will allow them to focus on better things.

In California for instance...

- It will grant Drivers Licenses. By doing so, you won't have to worry about getting into an accident and not getting your car to get fixed.

- Identity problems will be minimized since there will be no need for fake IDs or fake DLs.

- The IRS will make more money in taxes.

Think about it, it makes sense.

Gehzumteufel is almost right. It takes 10 years for Latin American countries to get visas, not because they're so close, but because there's so many people applying for them.

yeah that too. and i do agree with a guest worker program but i think that they should be limiting on what sort of governement assistance that immigrants should be able to collect. no matter what country they are from.
