pick your favorite rock song (that sounds easy to play) i suggest nirvana, black sabbath, metallica, something really simple. deep purple smoke on the water for example.
get tabs off the internet. look at the tabs, practice it on your guitar. then put your cd in, and try to play along to the song. keep practicing until you can play the song well. go to next song. repeat until you can play.
you'll start seeing a lot of similarities with the way you form most chords after you practice.
for example, the power chord, probably the simplest chord to play, is used in just about every hard rock song.
D-3--4--8--
A-3--4--8--
E-1--2--6--
etc etc notice how the position of your fingers don't change as you go up the neck. pm me if you need help i guess.
practice makes perfect |

oh yeah, and i guess you should probably pick up a basic chord book too. learn all the open chords Emaj, Emin, Cmaj, Amin, Amaj, D, Dmin, G
then around with them, strum different combinations of them, you'll get the hang of it. |

i am a dork. but here are the major chords on one very useful piece of paper. 1 is thumb, 2 is index finger, etc... and the right side of a box is the high E, the left is the low E

There is no way that 1 is thumb on those chord diagrams. 1 is your index finger, 2 is your middle finger, 3 is your ring finger, and 4 is the pinkie. |

I like how people bitch about tabs vs reading music.
Guess what..
It sounds the same @@
omg
and yeah, if you want to learn it well you can read the tab instantly and listen to the song at the same time.
I can learn a song in 15 minutes with tab and reading music is like learning spanish to eat enchiladas when either way youre pooping what someone else made out |

+1
always made sense to me
when i play piano, i read sheet music
when i play guitar, i read tabs
you can only hit middle c on a piano 1 way
but there are multiple ways to play it on a guitar
tabs are useful because you get the fingering and exact structure of the chord
so yeah, they seem a lil noobish at times, but they're in fact quite useful |

I've never learned music theory..read it up and got frikkin lost half way.
I've basically sold all my guitars.Maybe gonna buy 1 acoustic guitar and start learning some flamenco.. |

| Yeah classical music and music theory are useless fro most people who play guitar. 90% of the people who play guitar just want to know the chords to their favourite rock songs. If u want to get into classical, or flamenco or really into jazz you should learn music theory |

it's friggin hard man. the tips of my fingers were really sore when i tried a few times. and my wrist hurt too from holding it weird. it's awkward, i dunno how those rockstars do it.
i've always wanted to just go at it on a set of drums though. i have a feeling i'd have a little bit of natural talent for it, i dunno why. |

When you start out on guitar it can be painful but you get used to it!
Otherwise the drum thing ... well it's real freaking hard if you want to go for gold tbh. Some of the stuff is mathematical in a sense and it works real hard on the brain.
But back to the original question:
here is an easy song to learn. The video clip gives you a good idea of how to play the song
