school vs. what you really want to do

I have been studying engineering about almost 5 years now and about to get done with....

I sorta lost interest in it about an year ago and got more into business/marketing/finance kinda stuff and I am very good at it and will probably study this during grad school...

I din switch majors before bcos it would be a waste of 3 years...
Well, now that I am close to getting done...I have mixed feelings, happy about getting the degree but at the same time confused whether these were a waste of my efforts or not...

Learning is never a useless experience but still, its not been as satisfying for me as I would like it...hopefully when I get done with my MBA which starts this summer, I would see things differently

Has anyone been through a similar situation? And how have you all motivated yourself to work on something you don't care so much about.

Perspectives plzz....

i'm in the same boat but with a business degree and instead i'd rather be doing something creative like graphic design, photography, movie or music production. i might go back to school when i'm done with this...

that's why i never went to college. i couldn't decide on one thing that i wanted to do for the rest of my life.

luckily i am naturally skilled at graphic design... and i'll probably do it for the rest of my life.

I earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration, and though I very much enjoyed the experience, it did not result in me doing something that I crave every day. I work for a small community bank, and I have recently gotten into the compliance side of the business. It's a good challenge, and it pays the bills.

However, if I were single and I didn't have the responsibilities associated with two young children, I would do something else for a living. Something that didn't constantly involve the worries of money. Every month you have to worry about month end figures and reports. When that's over it's quarterly reports and figures. Then mid year. Then year end. Ad infinitum.

If I could do it all over knowning what I know now, I think I would have delved more deeply into something science related. I can see myself coming in to work around 10PM at a remote observatory to study gamma ray bursts, for example. Or sifting through the sands of some ancient civilization that died out thousands of years ago. No board to report to. No loans to collect. No monthly figures to meet or beat.

But, like you said, that might not pay the bills, so I won't have the luxury (in this life) of experiencing any of those other careers. Enjoy your graduate studies. I should have gotten my MBA. Had I been a little more stable at one point, I would have mine by now. But I had a lot of growing up to do then, and I squandered the opportunity.

I have made no worthy contribution to this thread, have I?

hear's a fact,

many CEOs and those people way up there in myriad companies studied engineering for college, and did MBA when they went into a company. since companies like to pay potentially brilliant people from the science section for MBA, i guess if your goal is to be successful, you're taking the most direct route towards it.

Well, yes you have...I am just looking for different situations...

After listening to you, I am feeling better about the fact that I am going for an MBA and the fact that I have suffered through 5 years of what I dun want to do makes me appreciate the next 2 years ahead of me...

As far as you are concerned, even though you have kids and stuff, does not mean that its the end of the world. Before you get too old you could definitely pursue an MBA and try to get into concentrations like operations management or tech. management which might give you an inclination towards a technical management job. It might appeal to you. There are so many part time MBA programs being offered these days... Just plan it out I say.

I see your point but dude, don't you think college is more than just learning one particular field...its a whole new experience ...

What say?

+ Any learning cannot harm you...If not a full fledged degree - you consider taking a couple of courses atleast...
