quote:

Affluence liberates the individual, promising that everyone can choose a "unique way to self-fulfillment," writes historian Avner Offer. But the promise is so extravagant that it preordains many disappointments and sometimes inspires choices that have antisocial consequences, including family breakdown and obesity. Statistical indicators of happiness, Offer notes, have not risen with incomes.

either I'm going completely retard or this article is one of the most incoherent pieces of writing I've read on a major news site in eons.

while I'm reading the article, I'm trying to figure out "What's your ing point?" or "what is the purpose of this article?"

what, one can't simply say "money does not buy happiness?" without writing a 2 page article anymore? Or did the person need to push the old, outdated babble that has been collecting dust in the publisher's warehouse and no recycling plant was keen to take it?

seriously confused.... *sigh* - definitely a very slow newsday at msnbc.com...

I'd have to agree it's a little incoherent. For instance his conclusion talks about "obesity" and "family breakdown" which were never even mentioned in his reasoning (and should've been discussed more).

But I still agree with the main point.

Well depends what people call happiness. Everyone has its own view of it. Money sure does help you reach happiness. I mean, why do we have a price on things? Why are all the best stuff the highest price? Why do we get paid every week, and not get a big smilie face that might make us happy. In my opinion, being wealthy, you have a bigger chance to be happier. Now alot of people, look at the worst things about having lots of money, but me, Id rather have money, then no money.

Obesity and wealth correlated?!

quote:
Obesity is linked to social class, being more common among those in the routine or semi-routine occupational groups than the managerial and professional groups. The link is stronger among women. In 2001, 30 per cent of women in routine occupations were classified as obese compared with 16 per cent in higher managerial and professional occupations.

Money doesn't buy happiness? What an idiotic statement. I laugh when people say that. Go ask "homeless jon doe" eating scraps out of the garbage can, peeing on himself to keep warm in the winter if $1 million dollars would make him happy. Or better yet go ask the starving people in Africa if they would rather live in house with a pool as opposed to a hut with a hole to piss in if they would be happy.

Money DOES buy happiness - absolutley.

I don't think money buys happiness, but it's hard as hell to be happy without any of it.

+1. Also, I don't think that HAVING money makes one happy if they've had it all their life. I think that starting out with little money and accumulating it makes you much happier.

So, seeing my above responce to your first part is true...and the part u wrote above is true that would mean money DOES buy happiness.

Steve Martin did this bit on SNL once, way back in the late 1970's, called "What I believe". He went down a list of things he supposedly believes in, this being one of them;

"I believe that sex...................is one of the most beautiful, wholesome and natural things that money can buy".

Always stuck with me.

Money will make you happy if you earn it rather than being born with a lot of money. You ever see those kids who are going to inherity on their 21st b-day like 300million dollars? Those kids are not exactly the happiest kids. They use drugs because they know they have a lot of money and they won't ever run out of drugs because their parents have money and so will their children.

Money won't necesarily make you happy, but I figure if you can buy a kilo of cocaine every week; than it just might.

Exactly. Hapiness is a state of mind, not something you can buy. But it's pretty hard to be in that state, or maintain it if even your basic necessities aren't being met, or, you have to struggle very hard in order for them to be met.

Edit: Formating.
