ok seriously rank 1 didn't do to Superstring except make it sound a little newer. Cygnus X made that big synth in superstring back in 1993...
also Rank 1 remix of superstring didn't come out until 2000...even tracks like Rank 1 - Airwave were before it. |

I was always under the impression that it was one of this big, fuzzy synth sounds that fill up space, a la:
Airscape - L'esperenza (Tiesto Remix)
Rank 1 - Awakening
Cygnus X - Superstring (Rank 1 Mix)
Future Breeze - Temple of Dreams
...and so forth. Out of the Blue and other typical Ferry productions have a synth sound which I've never considered a supersaw. However, as I've no experience of synths and all my knowledge is observational, can someone clear this up? |
It's a supersaw. Seven detuned saw waves, and there you go. Most of the time, it really does sound like , doesn't it? In fact, I'd say the original JP-8000 had one of the tiest supersaws out there. |

| Love them or hate them, they do add a lot of energy and epicness to otherwise standard tracks, its hard to get that sorta huge feel without supersaws. |

| "Babylon" by hemstock and jennings has a strong super-saw i believe. By the way "shadow-world" is a nice tune. It's good to hear some good instrumental melodic trance coming out every-now and than. (although this super-saw lead, break in the middle thing is so f*cking overplayed!!!) |

Out of the Blue doesn't use "arpeggiated riffs". That's actually multi-tap delay.
As for the "supersaw" argument, it all comes from that most cherished device of trance producers, the Roland JP-8000, a polysynth released in 96 which has a patch that delivers that gushing, wall-of-sound super saw right out of the box. Just about every reason why you people love trance today is almost directly attributed to the existence of this machine (and its derivatives, since most trance producers today don't work with it and rely on softsynth emulation), which provided every washy pad and bright, shiny technique necessary to form-fit trance into the pop music model so that the masses of normal people could like it.
I'm sure supersaws predate the JP-8000's saw wave patches all over the place, but for the context of this argument of course we're talking about ye olde Ferry Corsten Sound System. In that case, then we're only talking tracks released in the wake of the synth's release on the public market.....

That's the earliest I heard of it. Agnelli & Nelson - El Nino is another early one, though that was sandwiched in the anthem trance explosion heyday. |
