Alright, prepare for a lengthy review. Let me start off by saying this is the first mix of your I have listened to and hope to hear you guys progress as time goes on.
I listened to this mix as I was working at the computer, so for I can't be precise on exactly how great many of the transitions were, but if they were not good I noted them here. So as I was working at computer I was basically passively listening to your mix up until the third track by Slam. Now this is not neccessarily a bad thing to me, for some of my favorite mixes begin in such a manner, where nothing is fighting for your attention, rather you are gently brought into the specific atmopshere and mood of the mix. Now, with the Slam track I am finally getting into the mix, for this track finally presents some emotion in the mix with the nice layering of vocals and strings. However, as I would come to find this infusion of emotion would be the last for some time. The fourth track, which is usually where in many mixes I seem to find is where many mixes pick up steam, did not capitalize on this raised emoton from the previous track, however. The track was not bad, yet I could by no means see how it would be a great track, to me, this section of the mix 4-6 tracks are some of the most important next to of course the last few. Moving onto the next track, however, you rebound with the dark and sinister Trisco track which carries the night theme of the second disc quite well. Going into the DJ Phunk Track there is a relatively poor transition, but the track itself is a nice selection. From there it is smooth sailing until the dull glitchiness of the Phage, Drier track. I believe this track could have been shortened by at least a minute, as I don't see much depth in the track. I believe what you were shooting for was a change of pace from the rest of the mix in the doldrums of the track postioning, and in this place I feel that it is a good place for it. However, this track, I believe fell short as it didn't bring much to the table even in its specific role. Now with the Gaz Nevada track we finally get a much needed, and wanted, boost of adrenaline and more importantly, soul that wasn't present in the mix aside from the Slam track. The mix into the BPT track was choppy for a moment, but nothing too bad, and once again you came up with a nice track selection that kept the energy building. The final track was another nice selection, and served as a nice closer, however, the vocals that seemed to me, epic and worthy of a trance mix were out of place in yours. Perhaps a dub version would have been better here, although I do see how the vocals add emotion at this closing mark.
Overall, the mix felt anti-climatic and, to me, only had a few true birght spots. The mixing was pretty good and overall the focus of the mix was good. If I were to give it a rating out of 10, where 10 for me would be a mix on par with Balance 005, I would give you guys a 6.5, an above average mix. I hope that my review was helpful, as I too often see in this forum "SICK MIX" or "Stellar work", which while might serve your ego surely do not help you get better as a dj. As I just said, I feel you guys have put forth an above average mix with your second disk and look forward to hearing more from you two in the future. |
