Are you aware of the extent to which your views are cultural, or culture-induced?

America is a very egalitarian and idealistic country, with politically correct and gender-neutral attitudes to sex and love. But America is not the whole world. In Southern Italian villages, for example, the vast majority of husbands have affairs with other women, which is silently accepted by everyone although never discussed in public. And I remember reading a survey that in Germany, a significant number of Germans (perhaps even the majority) don't have negative views of extramarital sex.

i'd actually be very interested in seeing some valid studies and/or statistics that prove the differences between American vs European views on monogamous relationships. i did notice a huge difference in the way men and women presented themselves while i was in Greece... it seemed like men had a lot more of the "power" or freedom and the women seemed a lot more timid and shy.

sure, certain Europeans cultures might be more accepting of stuff like that, but the act of cheating is universal... and in the end it's really up to the two people involved in the relationship to decide what is or isn't considered cheating, regardless of their culture or where they live.

It's a pretty good point that got brought up. I'm from Europe originally, been living in US half of my life though. I have absolutely no problems with extramarital sex or open relationships where you or your partner sleeps with other people while being in a relationship with you. Seriously, I don't understand the jealousy and possessiveness that comes with American relationships at all.

The act maybe universal, however the gravity of the act is not. let's not get all bent out of shape over cheating.

to you it might not be a big deal, but when it comes down to it, cheating usually = disrespect, dishonesty, broken hearts, broken trust, etc... how can anyone remain happy when that is what their relationship is made of?

i mean it's a completely different story if you have an open relationship and BOTH people involved understand and communicate about what is or isn't appropriate... but i'm talking about flat-out cheating, going behind your partners back and betraying the trust.

i've been on both sides of the cheating spectrum and i've seen what it does to people and their relationships.

if a tree falls down in the woods and there's no one to hear it, does it really make a sound?

if i cheat on my girlfriend and she never finds out, did i really cheat?

man, i'm good.
