If the record is in mint condition, should it lose value because you are not purchasing it from a "record store"?
For all you know most tracks in record shops could be 2nd hand and you may never know. |
you're right, but thats not the discussion here, nor of any matter. where discussing WHY it's losing value and whats related to that ... |

its a really interesting topic if you ask me, ive been watching certain vinyls over the past 6 months and ive only just seen a major change on the bay. for example take dreas pres havannah - havannah, 4 months ago this record was seen as rare/hard to get hold of and would have fetched anything upto £20+ on ebay, now i saw a couple of auctions the other day with this 12" in question, one went for next to nothing and the other didnt even sell. theres a certain pattern emerging, and imo it has only just started to creep in (in respect to trance music on the bay.)
i know certain labels have reissued certain hard to get hold copies which would explain a drop, but this isnt the case for the overall sudden drop on the bay. im in 2 minds, because im happy that prices have fell so i can get some rare goodies ive been after for ages, because although i have gone digital i still collect vinyl, at the same time i have some rare vinyl which i particulary bought cheap to sell on to make a profit, but this doesnt look the case at the moment. but i can wait, but i know some people are pissed off by the look of it.
its an interesting subject none the less.

in the past I would buy second hand to save money. Buying downloads negates that advantage. Given that now I can also get wav downloads it's more than likely that the sound quality will also be better than what a used and abused record will give.
also seems less recent releases are becoming available. Used to be the pro's would be always buying records and off-loading them 6 months to a year later. now they have gone digital the stuff on ebay is older and older. |

thats 1 major shift too. now, u see every1 sells new stuff. i even have a lot of 20 anjunabeats records for sale, from which some are quite new (sunny lax, etc.) .. i wouldnt buy them new in a record store, i bought them 2nd hand for a good, hopefully to sell them again with a better price once i get tired of playing, or when the records dont fetch my style ... |

CDJ's are getting cheaper.
Rare tunes are easily accessible on P2P networks.
You can burn the tune to a CD and you will have no need for the vinyl.
There's your answer.
That of course is bad news for Edog-Records :(
I will always find it more substantial to own a vinyl, with its cover and as its a physical item, rather than to pay for a piece of code that you can't pick up and touch etc, but at this moment in time, the digital revolution is completely overshadowing the analogue collective.
Mind you, with high end mixers using analogue elements in their technology (with rotary mixers etc) i'm sure vinyl will make a come back :) |

Vinyl is dead guys, has been for a while. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. |
Yet another reason why I love it, appreciating a media form not many people bother with any longer. Plus, I just can't see myself using Serrato Scratch to mix all the time. |

CDs may have won for now, but as the use of computers increase cds will become extinct as vinyl will still exist. |
I completely agree. BUT, i have all the old tracks in a digital format already (CD) and therefore my purchases have all been future proof from the begining... and now that ive copied them over to hard disk, the CD's will make great backups if the mp3's ever get wiped or whatever.
Vinyl collectors can rip their vinyl, but lets face it, the quality is crap and there's discrepencies in the bpm + clicks and pops all over the place. In other words they will have to REBUY their collection in the new format and the vinyl will be redundant. |

I think vinyl on ebay varies a lot by factors which in turn vary -
I sell vinyl when the schools are off to attract as large a audience as possible. I always make sure it ends on an evening when no 'big' tv programs are on - or a Friday or Sat night when dance music people may be out.
I can put a record on ebay which won't sell, then immidiately re-list it and it'll so ok.
I normally get 99p for most records, but others can go up to £6.
There's just no real way of telling if two people who've been looking for it just happen to log onto ebay at the right time.
I have to optimistic as I'm selling a lot of my un-played stuff.
Completely thorough and professional adverts also help - there's lots of variables I believe - not just a general 'trend' or decline, although I have to agree the availability of rare songs has never been greater now due to MP3s. |

I take it it's the tiesto remix that's rare then.
As for myself I just love having a vinyl collection and a lot of that's down to the collecting part.
I just got a track after bout 5 years of searching and theres no way I could feel the same if I had got it as an mp3. |
