Nope I was very into Choy Lay Fut when I was younger and people in their 30s and 40s used to come in quite regularly and I'd have to teach them the basics. If you're going to a proper martial arts school it will help you progress faster if your reasonably fit when you start. If you're going to choose a Chinese art, and find a school and wanna know whether it sounds legit let me know and I'll help you out. There's a lot of conmen out there who don't teach what they claim to.

Yeah Judo is a Japanese martial art. Mainly throws and takedowns with a little bit of ground work. From the sounds of things you should probably take a look at Jujitsu as well (both Japanese and Brazilian), it may interest you - has a lot more groundwork. I don't know as much about Japanese martial arts, though they seem to attract fewer loonies which is a good thing.

From my experience it's always good to check the master's linneage just as a way to be sure that he is teaching what he claims to be. Martial arts dedicated forums are good places to ask about schools.

This place is a Kung Fu forum but has people that practice BJJ and Judo too whod be able to help you out:

I want to kill bitches like jet li, is it too late to learn?

20 is far from too late. The first school I went to had a lot of retired people who took it up just to stay fit. And in 10 years time you'd still be in great shape physically, with 10 years experience. Would you consider a 30 year old with 10 years training to be crap?

astroboy, which school did you go to? I started doing iwng chun in sydney, then moved over for 2 years chay lay fut. That was 15 years ago though, the school is now a comic book shop :(

i just started tae kwon do a few months ago, and i'm 18. def not too late. my dad is taking it with me. he used to do ITF tae kwon do when he was about my age or a bit younger (30 some years ago), was a brown belt, and is starting from 0 with me now to get in shape.

not to mention, 2 weeks ago, this 40 year old dude joined our school. he already has a deadly circular kick (he must weigh like 260 pounds, so you do the math).

the benefits of martial arts are amazing. in a few short months, i can touch my toes (w00t, never did that before), kick over my head, my endurance is way up, and my strength has increased. i'm not as clumsy anymore, and i'm getting faster.

if you really wanna get into it and stick with it, read up on your styles and pick what you think best suits you, grappling, throws, kicking, perhaps even some armed combat style. a dude wielding wooden nunchakus is a bitch to deal with, hehe.

going for my orange belt on sunday. really its a re-test, since i scored a 93 like 3 weeks ago on my first test, and the grandmaster said he could fly me over from white to orange, but wanted me to correct a defect i had in my roundhouse kick. i think i got it handled by now.

in any case, DO IT!

If you are going to learn martial arts, make sure you learn the 'defense against plastic boat oars' technique. Even some of the greatest masters don't know it, as seen below:
