Review: Steve Lawler @ Guv 10.06.06 (pg. 11)

The Highroller
I arrived at The Drink at about 12.30am. I am so glad I made the decision to go through The Drink, or else I probably would have left very shortly after I came up. I went downstairs to say hi to all the TAs. Between a guy using a conga line of 2 ghetto looking girls as a battering ram to get through the crowd, and another guy getting an inch from my face screaming "I AM SO ED UP RIGHT NOW", I decided that it was time to take refuge from the usual Guvernment main room show.

Before the D'Luxe Lounge opened, I spent the majority of my night on the platform outside of The Drink exit. It was the only place in the whole club where I could seek at least a little bit of refuge. The D'Luxe Lounge didn't open until about 3am or so. This is the one thing I HATE about Spin Saturdays. I really wish they had the D'Luxe Lounge open all night.

A few of the positive aspects of the night in the Guvernment: the music. All I have to say iS "WOW!" I didn't even really like Barato before Saturday night, but he played an absolutely stellar opening set.

Lawler's set was really, really good too. When I was in the D'Luxe Lounge and actually able to enjoy it, I don't think I stopped dancing even once. Awesome builds, crazy and relentless beats for the entire 2 hours of his set. He certainly made up for his mediocre set on Halloween. One thing I have realized though is that Lawler's sound is not a big room sound. The vibe of Lawler parties in the Guv doesn't hold a candle to the vibe of his parties in smaller venues like System. I really have no desire to see Lawler in the Guv again.

The Skybar:

Once again, Nathan Barato played a really great opening set for Lawler. As Lawler came on, people started pouring in. Then more people started pouring in. Then more people, then more people. Eventually, it got to a point where it was so packed, that unless I was sitting down, I was constantly moving around to get out of other people's way. It was like this for a good hour and a half at least. I can't even tell you how Lawler's set was on the Skybar, because it was so packed that I couldn't even pay attention to the music. I am very unimpressed by the lack of organization by security/management for the Skybar set. The bouncers weren't counting the amount of people that went up or left the Skybar. That place was WAY over capacity and was a huge fire hazard. There was absolutely no room anywhere for most of the morning. The Skybar set wasn't anything close to last year. It may have been if it wasn't so packed and you could actually enjoy yourself.

For the last 30 mins of the set, when I could sometimes find some room to dance, I really enjoyed myself. The vibe of the crowd, especially right in front of the booth was just off the hook.

In summary:

- Lawler rocks, just not in a big room.
- The Guvernment crowd gets worse every time I go.
- The Skybar was a huge let down.
- It is going to take me quite a lot to ever go to a Spin Saturday ever again.

Had a little bit of a hard time getting ready to go to this party, but I finally got myself together and was on my way. Nada and Ali thank you so much for picking me up. Not sure if I would have made it otherwise. Got into Guv around 2:30, not really a line up which was nice. Not impressed with the searchers they had working. There was no pat down and they only looked in my cigarette pack, nothing else. Coat check was a breeze, which was nice; walking into the main though was frightening. It was packed, wall-to-wall people and so hot. Not that I didn’t expect it, but holy . Walking through that place was impossible. We decided to hit up the gallery first, which I thought was the best idea... We lost Lars and Jo the minute we walked in there, could not see them anywhere. The tunes were awesome, but the people were messed. So off to the patio it was…

Thank god for the little corner we found out there. Perfect for Nada to bust out the moves. I on the other hand I could only stand there, in awe as to how many people were in this place. I was really enjoying the tunes that Steve was playing though. Tried to start dancing, but every time I would someone else would come and invade my space. I finally get a text form Lars telling me that there was room in the D’Luxe Lounge to dance and that I should make my way up there. After about 20 minutes I finally got enough courage to do it. And I am happy I did, there was so much room in there. I find everyone and just started dancing, figured the only was to get over the frustration was to dance it off.

I was up there for not even a half hour when Steve announces to the whole club that he will be playing on the Skybar, and everyone should join him there. So of course there was a mad dash to get up there. I had to go down to the Guv coat check to grab my jacket, which turned out to be the biggest mistake I could have made. Getting back up stairs was near impossible. Totally lost RJ and Justin in the madness and I was stuck in front of this total ass who was rubbing up against me. Now this wasn’t just rubbing – this was like “grinding”. Tried pushing him off but he wouldn’t budge, turned around and told to step back, but he would move. Can anyone please tell me what people are thinking when they do this, like do you really think I am enjoying you on my ass? I was so angry when I finally made up to the Drink. There was thankfully no line to get up to the Skybar…

Steve finally came on around 6. Heard many of the same tracks that he played in the main room. Which wasn’t a total let down, cause they were amazing. Pete Heller – Simpler has now become one of my favorite tracks. I was not happy at how packed it was. There was no room for dancing and I was being pushed around like a rag doll. Biggest pet peeve of the night – people constantly waking around, I saw the same guy walk past me like 50 times in the 3 hours I was up there. Like come on now, find a spot and stay there.

Wasn’t sure how long Steve was going to play for, but to be honest, was not upset that it ended just before 8:30. I want to thank Lars and Jamie for the extra layers they handed off to me when they got hot. I was frozen all night/morning. I was wearing two sweaters and two jackets at one point. So in all the night was a little frustrating, but I really enjoyed the tunes.

The best part of the night was right at 4 or so when EVERYBODY was trying to get upstairs from the main room to go to the Skybar for Lawler.

Lisa and I are pushing through the crowd, trying to get to the stairs, and some guy jumps in between us. I'm trying to get around, and some girl grabs me and says "oh don't you even ing try it, buddy" to which I replied "I'm just trying to get up here with my girlfriend." Lisa turns around and confirms it, and the girl apologizes and lets me through.

A minute later, I decide to tell Lisa exactly what happened, and I wasn't paying attention to whom I was talking to. I put my hand on what I thought was her shoulder but turned out to be a short Asian dude, whom when I turned to look at after I finished telling my story looked exactly like this:

Lisa laughed at me as she watched the whole thing. Thank the dude was cool about it, he laughed as well.

Goddamn.

Lawler is the reason I got into house music in the first place and Saturday was nothing different for me.
I love his sound!

The mainroom as it seems happens everytime Lawler is here was a show. With guvernment I've just decided that you either have to have the mindset to be able to deal with it and still have fun or not .
We made the most of it, and having tons of friends around made it better.

Skybar was just as packed, and a little chilly, but truely enjoyable. I love it up there and Lawler was fantastic.

One big huge Happy Birthday to RJ, it was a pleasure to spend your b day with you, you are a good friend!

i dunno but GET ON IT cuz you can't just cut this effn track like that :whip:

i hope the sunset to sunrise party with Lawler @ skybar becomes a tradition in the summer :D
kabelicious
I almost wish the Skybar set was a smaller shindig with an added ticket price on it so that you could weed out the facktards with no clue as to who is spinning or where they are for that matter. I would gladly pay an extra $15-20 to be guaranteed a 4-5 hour Lawler sunrise set with less sketch, more tunes.

Or that Lawler would play Sonic instead next time.

Lawler being just "okay"? well everyone has their own music tastes and club experiences. i can respect that. i thought it was more than "just" okay, great vibe, good weather, beautiful sunrise, some fresh air to breathe (as oppose to being inside the guv) and more importantly some wiked people dancing to the sounds of Lawler :D

oh mannnnnnnnnnnn soooooooooooooooooooooooo true!! it was perfect!!!!
