People expected England to win every World Cup they played in during the 1950s but it didn't happen.

A lot of the "European power houses" haven't had brilliant games yet. But they're still winning and that's what matters, England included.

And if Crouch's goal was a foul, he might as well not even bother to play. He's 6 foot 7...he goes up for a ball against an opponent. Obviously there is going to be some contact and because of his size, it looks like he's leaning all over people. As I said, pushing and shoving, hands around the neck, etc is commonplace on headers in the box.

You're right. If he's 6 foot 7, and needs to climb with his arms over other players to win the ball, he might as well not even bother to play.

That's why an England vs Germany matchup in the next round is fitting  hopefully it will occur

I see...so footballers shouldn't touch each other ever whilst going for a ball? There was nothing flagrant about his goal and this supposed foul. T and T's near goal that was cleared off the line shouldn't have counted either because Ferdinand was shoved from behind. Boo hoo.

I'd rather see it in the semis or the final. Avoiding Germany and Brazil should, for as long as possible, be top priority for Sven's men. They need to win the group to ensure that.

One thing is contact, another is to put your hand into another player in order to climb over him. That is a foul. If you can't see the difference between legal contact and foul contact, then you're a moron and i can't be arsed to draw you a picture.

I agree there was a foul on Ferdinand on that clearing off the line.

3 points. that's what we needed. Nobody looks at brazil's group games, or france's in 1998 & says 'well they could've bene better that day' it's the big matches what counts.

well the referee didn't agree with you and neither do I. And he called a good game from my view. If you start calling fouls like that, the refs would never put away their whistles. The game is already too much like bloody basketball on grass.

And what Ian said is correct. Everybody analyses the out of England's games. yes they played very casual, but they are TWO, ZERO and ZERO = SIX POINTS = QUALIFIED FOR ROUND OF 16. That's all that matters.

England doesn't impress, but there are others who does the same aswell.

Crouch's foul wasn't blatant as it was only seen in a certain camera angle. The ref might have just missed it.

I don't get this bull talk of the game being "too basketball-like". Grabbing another guy in the area is a foul, period. That is what the rules say. You can't expect the refs to ocasionally ignore the rules in order to "improve the flow of the game" - there has to be a line between what is legal and what isn't. I can understand it happening when you're in the centre of the midfield and not giving a foul that nobody claimed doesn't change anything, but in the area it's a completely different story. It can completely change a game.

As for England not impressing but doing just enough, well, you're absolutely right. I feel it's kinda sad tho that England did absolutely nothing yet still qualified when teams like Ivory Coast who impressed a lot can't go through cause they're in an extremely strong group. But meh, these are the rules, and we (Portugal) are likely to do the same as you guys anyway.

Dj Smitty20
that's just the way the groups go. England have had their fair share of "groups of death" and managed to get out of one last time around. I still don't think it was a foul...by the time Crouch had his hands near the defender, the ball was already heading into the net. I referee teenage soccer and I don't call those types of fouls unless it's brutally obvious. Crouch's "foul" was about as obvious as Terry's against Portugal in Euro 2004 QF. That was called, this one wasn't.

Well in Crouch. You are .
