There should be play-offs for all those in the quarter finals also.

So there would be:
A final
3rd place match
Play-offs for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places.

any real reason of why to stop with quarterfinals instead of going all the way upto 32nd place? besides to award these places one single match for each team wouldn't do it.

making a single 3rd place match is the most logical option.

I unfortunately didn't get to watch the game.. but..

and ok, I am officially done with my happiness of Portugal being gone now :p

I can't remember what site it was...but I was looking at England's history in the WC and it had them listed as 6th in 86, 8th in 2002. Both were QF defeats....how can 5,6,7,8th places even be determined?

some method of counting points from all played games like if it was all a group stage.

At quarter finals the following scenario happens:
4 teams win
4 teams lose

Many interesting teams are among the 4 losers. Therefore it would be interesting to see a 2nd kind of semifinal (i.e. if one of the matches in the main semifinal is the winner of game 4 against the winner of game 6, the minor semifinal would be against the loser of game 4 agains the loser of game 6, and so on).

Sure this is not the perfect system (the best would be the system used in the 1950 World Cup for the finals), but there would be some very interesting matches here as well.

Doing it all the way up to the 32nd would end up involving too many weaker teams.

Points, goals scored... usually they do this once the WC ends.

I think it's cruel enough to be blown out of the finals and then you have to come back to play for a 3rd place no one gives a crap about?

What if you're defeated for the second time? It's bad enough you got your bottom spanked right before the big tourney, now you get it spanked again?

the only thing I can think of as being beneficial - give the secondaries/subs chance to play in WC and give them little exposure before potential recruits. Though, I think the game between Germany and Portugal will be boring. I don't think you're going to see too many startes in the line-up.

o well.... Now, let's see which country has better divers... France or Italy.

Smart money is on Italy - they dived their way to the WC, while France is relative amatures.

Actually, is anyone keeping track of how many games Italy won in this WC on diving alone? I think Australia game was 100% due to their aquatic skillz. Ausies should feel proud that they only got kicked out of a WC and allowed Italy to swim towards finals by being merely present in penalty box.:thepirate

ok, so now you have two teams that won those 2 "minor semifinals", they get 5th and 6th place.. wait, how do you define who is 5th and who is 6th. you're going to need 3 "minor finals" now, for 7th/8th, for 5th/6th, and for 3rd/4th.

It's not worth the trouble. This is making knocked out teams play a bunch of glorified friendlies with no motivation. A single 3rd place match is good but enough.

True about they having no motivation. But I do wonder whether the semis wouldn't be more interesting if it were just like another group (i.e. the 4 semi-finalists would play among themselves the same way all teams in the 8 first groups did).

I don't think the teams would go for it anyway. Placing 5th or 8th doesn't matter to the players or to the country. I guess this is how they help determine FIFA world rankings?

Ok ronaldo is a bitch when it comes to diving but the geniousness that dude pulls out of his boots is just

Wank all you want, he's more brilliant than 99% of the WC players.
