two good qualities to have but defiently not the most notable when it comes to popularity.
infact i'm sure people with half of your skill get booked twice as much as you but they are by no means worse Dj's. |
Suggestions please??? Obviously my approach is all wrong :( |

yeah a proper lineup would include both Kenosis and Electrophile. Psytrance in the backroom ftw. |
Kenosis, Ruben, Josh Allen and one other and you've got yourself a proper, banging as party. Someone sort it out. |

Thanks Raoul. By the way I took your advice on my mix and I think you will be pleased with my next one ;) What you said really sunk in after closely listening to, and observing J00F two nights in a row. |

My suspicion is that you've just been talking to people associated with Spundae or Heaven or what have you: that 'level'. If that's correct then I think you have to realize that for many people in your situation it's really going to be kind of a crapshoot getting gigs. Sometimes you get a lucky break, sometimes you don't. I guess what I'm saying is that, unlike (for me) academia, the dj culture is not really a meritocracy. It's something I had to learn the hard way, and I unnecessarily pissed off a lot of people because kept wanting it to be different. Think of it in terms of dollars and cents. If you don't already have a following what is the economic benefit for club promoters to bump some local who has a bit of a pull. You have to be a product that they the promoters want to buy. The problem is that you become worthy of their attention once you have a pull but it's difficult to get booked when you don't have a pull already: it's almost circular that way.
I don't want to demean any of those clubs in any way because they're all great, but I think perhaps they're not for you (*at the moment*)you should try to work your way up with other venues first.
In my personal experience the rave scene is a lot more populist and easier to get gigs when you aren't already a known quantity. The drawback of course is that you have to put up with the drugs, other djs opening for you playing hardcore or breakcore or crapcore or whatever, 14 year olds od'ing in front of you and the like. You also have to figure out how to keep them engaged without playing "Castles in the Sky" or "As the Rush Comes" every set: I'm sure you can do that. I don't think playing raves has quite the same stigma it did maybe two or three years ago, so maybe it's worth a shot.
If that's not for you then the best options are just to keep doing what you're doing and maybe do some production work to get more exposure. |
