This man single handedly got me into trance big-time. I got started by listening to Trance Control from mp3.com, and I asked around who I should check out, and someone said Oakenfold. While his track selection isn't always the greatest, his innovation and uniqueness is. I proudly have over 30 Oakenfold livesets alone, and I want more.

I guess you could call him overrated and stuff, but that's not his fault. He was just idolized by being one of the first to bring trance to the mainstream in Europe.
Fire999
All I can say is that Paul Oakenfold's rise to success is a combination of both Luck and Timing, just like Bill Gates or any other successful, renowned people in the world.

Digesting trance is easy for anyone out there....Oakie had the foresight and push trance to its limits...His sets in the mid-90s all the way till now, to me is unsurpassed by anyone..except for Tiesto (who is also over-rated now till some peeps hate him now)

Paul Oakenfold experimented with lots of genres, from Goa, Melodic, progressive to Drum & Bass and breaks...His Perfecto remixes with Osborne reign clubs worldwide back in 1998 and 1999. The Perfecto remix of Mansun's Wide Open Space remains to be top one of the floor-fillers.

I must say that his livesets I have been to, some are bad and some excellent...Paul Oakenfold was recieving tons of promos, way before anyone DJs out there, he handpicked them, signed them to his label and they skyrocketed in the scene. Nowadays, any Tom, Dick and Harry can get promos off websites...making the tunes overplayed. The industry is constantly evolving, with money-minded individuals jumping the band-wagon. He forsaw that and came up with his latest tune "Southern Sun"...now who's to say that song sucks?

To say that Paul Oakenfold is in for the money is simply passe. Who the hell is not the DJ/producer business for the money? All DJs are in this biz for the dough..even Tiesto nowadays, making slip short remixes (like Lost Witness - Did I dream) or commercial remixes like (DMB - The Space Between) Please, we live in a society where fame and wealth work hand in hand...take that fame and start remixing a few tunes and you'll still be getting the dough.

Paul Oakenfold, despite peeps who diss him on a regular basis, is still one of most respected DJs in the world. Over-rated? Who's not nowadays...Communication in the 21st Century is travelling so damn fast, that anyone can find out about tunes right away , with mp3s and livesets.

In the 90s, not everyone owns a computers and have internet connections, so they would go down to a live set by any DJ for that very experience of new tunes....It's definately much more different now..

Do what you do best in , and most of all, do it well...Oakie has done it, became the highest paid DJ in the world....now who's going to take that away from him? Technology, maybe.....but I definately hope that he continues to sign and produce more top-notch tunes like Southern Sun in years to come...

Bill Gates, Enstein or Paul Oakenfold....if there are no such people in existence, there'll be others waiting in line to take their place of their achievements....

Just my humble 2 cents worth..

Trance is definately back!

Peace out....

I'm not sure what to think about oakie, I mean I agree with Spad, Oakies made some great contributions, and has done a lot for the scene. I also agree with Eugene that he was in the right place at the right time. But regardless, I respect what he's done.

alright, so i KNOW there will never be an end to people who bash oakey and those who love him. one interesting comment ive heard said about him (from his Essential CD with FBS) was something like: "Oakenfold is popular because he always seems to know what will be popular next." i wont go as far as to say whether this is completely TRUE or completely FALSE. it doesnt draw an interesting comparison with tiesto and how his recent style refelcts much of what Oakey did with Travelling. Oakeys tranceport also created much of the US interest in trance we see today and continues to do so still. as Spad has said, there are numerous other contributions to note as well. my main beliefas to why Oakey was, is and WILL CONTINUE to be popular is because he does what he does, when he wants to and doesnt give a . you can say whatever you want about mixing skills, since he has been Djing for longer than many of us have been listening (or actively pursuing) music...does any of that matter? prolly not  late/

I have nothing but respect for the man. Tranceport was the first trance CD I bought and it really introduced me to the scene. His EM World Tour in 99 is still the source of some of the best live sets of all time. Just because he is changing his style and experimenting does not mean he sucks. IMO people who criticize him now are just bandwagon-jumping hypocrits who bash Oakenfold because he is so popular now (How many criticized him back in 98/99/00). , you all know if you were in his place you'd want to be raking in as much cash as you could also - after all it IS a business, as much as it is glorified for the love of the music.
