Many of you are aware of Ishkur's Guide To Electronic Dance Music
http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html

It is a flash website which lists all 7 main Edm genres(House, Trance, Techno, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore, and Downtempo), and all 2 dozen or so subgenres for each one. When you click on a subgenre you see alternate names for it and a bio. Also you get to listen to samples of songs in the genre.

I went through literally all genres and subgenres in the guide and listened to literally all samples. I compiled a list of all the subgenres which I like "Some" or "A lot". Here is my list...

HOUSE
-----
Some: Disco, Italo, Synthpop, Dub, Garage, Hip, Techno Dance, Vocal, Jpop, French
A lot: Freestyle, Anthem, Epic, Epic Trance, Eurodance, Happy, Nu Italo, Eurobeat

TRANCE
------
Some: Italo, Symphonic, Industrial Rock, Synthpop
A lot: Progressive, Anthem, Ibiza, Dream, Epic Trance, Goa

TECHNO
------
Some: Techno Dance, VGM
A lot:

BREAKBEAT
---------
Some: Hip Hop, Big Beat, East Coast, West Coast, G-Funk
Gangsta, New Jack Swing, Electro Swing, Techno Dance
A lot: Freestyle

JUNGLE
------
Some: Jazzstep, Ambient Techno
A lot: Oldskool, Happy

HARDCORE
--------
Some:
A lot: Oldskool, Happy

DOWNTEMPO
---------
Some: Early Synth, Synthpop, Downbeat, Ambient Techno
A lot: Ambient Breaks

---

I am mainly interested in the Eurodance style house and the more popular styles of Trance. I also like Astral Projection's Goa Trance, and some Happy Hardcore. What is your preference? Please list SPECIFIC listings, just like I did. Write which subgenres you like "Some" or "A lot" for literally all genres. What do you like? :D !!!

Your list is useless because Ishkur's guide to EDM is total bollocks.

Indeed. But for some reason people like to take it seriousely.

Okay so maybe I don't agree with with what he said about Detroit techno.
Detroit techno is an artform that evokes strong spiritual feelings!

'Blue Potential', a collaboration between Jeff Mills and the philharmonic orchestra of Montpellier, is an example of that.

And maybe 'Jump up' is not that stupid, okay maybe it is but still, it is fun music, nothing wrong with 'jump up'.

But when it comes to fake trance he truly nailed it!

Epic Trance is the gateway into the world of rave for most people, so if you have any form of music to blame for raves hitting the mainstream, this is it. Right here.
And that, my friends, really, truly, sucks.
There must be a word to describe the pain one feels when witnessing (or hearing) something once pure and brilliant completelly sold down the river.
Sometime in the mid-90s trance decided to drop the technique of slowly introducing complicated layers and building adequate tension over long stretchees and replacing them with cutesy little insta-melodies (Robert Miles might actually be the one to blame for this).

And my favorite part;) :
The average attention span, way too ritalin-freaked to pay attention to the slow, brooding trance in it's original form, liked the anthemic singalong tone of the new mc trance
and that is why all you trance crackers are reading this right now.
Not because you a taste for this super awesome underground music or discovered it all by yourself once upon a time.
But because trance reformed its sound and delivery to suit your sweet-toothed, top-40 music consuming tastes.
Because the truth is Epic trance is not actually trance, per se.
It is powdered, sugar-coated pop schmaltz drapped over trance for easy digestion by giggling highscool girls and poser trendy types who would never think to even blink at trance in its raw incarnate.
This is the musical equivalent of drowning a meal in ketchup so that you can't taste the original flavour anymore.

that's what ish says, but then he's on here waxing bitter about everything post-'94; based on his online persona, "lighthearted" or "humorous" are last things to come to mind...

No. The music side of the guide is perfectly accurate in the majority of cases. As a guide to the evolution of electronic music and also the classification of sub-genres, it's serious. The joke bits are in the text- namely Ishkur's opinion on the various genres.

Despite his guide being done in a tongue-in-cheek manner, it's still about the best breakdown (lol @ Ishkur and breakdowns) of genres in electronic music out there. It'd divided up fairly accurately with good samples to boot; just his personal descriptions are a bit off so as to show his support or dismay of a particular genre.

Ishkur did put in a lot of his time and effort to make that thing for you guys. I dont know what it says is right or wrong. But I appreciate his initiative.

If you guys think there is something wrong, than PM him or post it in here; and he will rectify the mistake.

He is also a human, not god.
