I started going to guv in 1997...back then the orange room was the place to be (in terms of where the party was at...)
late '97 saw some of the ravers come into the stage at the back during the normal nights... I still remember being in the drink and I was wondering wtf was up with all the glowsticks in that corner. Then I hit a house/techno jam on a Sunday night in Dec/98 in the Orange Room and I understood a bit better, lol.
As Special K mentioned, the crowd is VERY different now and the main room lost much of its lustre after the 1999-2001 reign. It was pretty much a 'rave-like' experience there every saturday night, great vibe, friendly peeps, danceoffs and all.
However, you can't really blame Guv in any of this since the rave act effectively killed raves in this city and the good things/social nets that came from those events no longer spilled into the club environment on a weekly basis. Lack of variety then meant that lots of people slowly became pigeon-holed into their genre(s) of choice and only attended club nights that played to their newer, more refined tastes. |

i recall seeing DJ Tiesto play there for the first time back in August 2000 (yes he was still "DJ" Tiesto then lol). We paid the usual $10 cover (yes $10 cover!!) on a Spin Saturday to catch him. This was only his 2nd time playing in Canada (the first being Wintergalactic earlier in February). The club was half empty and never having seen him play live before I mistakened him for some bald guy whom I now believe to have been Mark Scaife. Anyways, it was an awesome night with many classics played that define the genre today.
I recall the mainroom still had those chain curtain things hanging from the ceilings and the place looked a lot cleaner overall for some reason. Like Swamper said the crowd was definately a lot different, with a lot of ravers and even liquid kids out in full force doing their thing, danceoffs and what not. Prior to that it used to be a Eurodance and House mecca in its time known as RPM, live with none other than Chris Sheppard. Believe it or not there were even some Hullabaloo parties held there once!
Some great memories there, but as many have said it's changed so much since then. The crowd, the building, everything!
For anyone who's interested, I made some long ass winded post about a week ago on the scene in the city since it's hayday in the 80's/90's till present day with tidbits of Guv history in there. thread is here:

i'm pretty sure it was a weeknight instead (i think wednesday), not a spin saturday event... :p
but as a lot of people have pointed out, the guv of 99/01 was definitely the golden age of its 10 years... though i really like how it has evolved and set new standards for clubbing in general in this city with all the various rooms and various sounds catering to such diverse crowd each and every weekend...
viva la guv!

Good times at Guv eh?
I got into the scene a little later than some. I remember my first party was Scott Bond in February 2002 (whatever happend to that guy?). Back then I was still into trance, and I remember Armin was THE party to be at, when going to the Guv. There were rumours floating around that he's starting a residencey at Guv because of how frequently he played there, but obviously that never happend. Best party back then was definately my first time seeing Armin in April 2002, but the best time I've had in the mainroom would probably be Sasha/James Zabiela on LoL 2003. |

yea ... pretty much most spin saturday nights with marky mark. back when guv used to RARELY if EVER bring in guest djs on saturdays and mark would play all night. when trance was actually good, and believe it or not (hard to imagine when u go there now i know) the crowd and vibe in that room were off the hook.

I tend to agree the others about the 2000-ish time period at The Guvernment - however, it is important to note that Guv still does it proper.
Think:
- Lawler/Sasha Skybar (Jun-05)
- The Carl @ Guv 9 Year (Oct-05)
- DEEP DISH (live) @ LoL 2005 (Sep-05)
Those were uberparties!
So yes, Guv may not have the "every weekend magik" going on anymore - but when the magik does happen it happens in a big, big way. |
