Tiesto was definitely on a Thursday. Pretty sure it was $15.

One of my favourite moments of Guv was seeing Erick Morillo on Boxing Day. I'm pretty sure it was 1998. I just finished having a holiday dinner at Mr. Green Jeans in Eaton Centre. My friend and I are driving north on Yonge, and out of the blue, turn the car around and head for Guv.

We walk in and Erick Morillo is dropping Basement Jaxx - Fly Life! Awesome!

The Golden Day crowd? We were all still ravers at that point.

that's probably why it was so empty.. tho i'd imagine in this day and age it'd be rammed even on a Thursday

KING-SIZED COMFORTS
by
HOLLY GOES
September 12, 1996

Why I love clubs: a) I can go and be seen; and b) I can go and see who I'm going to be going with. But there's a new phenomenon in Toronto -- a sudden rash of monolithic clubs have opened up, clubs such as At The Docks, which reportedly boasts a 6,000-person capacity. What does one do with 5,999 other people? I realize that some people feel the need to get down to thumping bass in a crowd in which they can lose themselves, but how can you narrow down which lucky guy is going to be buying you your first drink when you have a choice of over 1,000?

Many of these big clubs seem to have the antidote to their own hugeness by supplying not only a huge dancefloor, but also small side lounges or "chill-out rooms" for those of us who like to hear the music of our favorite DJs while telling the guy next to us how we drink our martinis. Wanting to see if these clubs can actually offer both, I decided to finally bite the bullet and step into the Big Time.

One of the larger and newer clubs, the Guvernment, is R.P.M.'s newest resurrection, boasting one huge dancefloor which is impossible to walk across in under 20 minutes. But once off it, the reason why this club will be the place to be becomes apparent -- there are about six separate lounge-type rooms ranging from a coffee and dessert space to a seventies inspired chill-out zone, but the club's crowning glory is definitely the VIP area upstairs. Here gorgeous gals and player boys lounge on couches, chairs or a big pink fun fur bed complete with a mirrored ceiling, and groove to the tunes of the room's own private DJ. All that's missing is people to actually fill that bed and you've got the perfect all-night spot.

Orchid, another club with one immense dancefloor, does not have the size to have as many little lounge corners in their club as Guvernment, but what they lack in size they make up for in exclusivity. Their main lounge is located off of the dancefloor and is open enough so that those lounging can scope those dancing. This lounge is for private members only and is watched over by a tuxedo-clad bouncer. How to become a member? You either pay for the privilege or are awarded it for being one of the club's better patrons. A club within a club is an idea that scores big points with moi, for not only do you get the energy benefits of the big dancefloor DJ, but you get to enjoy it with the club-goers' club-goers.

R.P.M. is not the only club that has gotten a make-over. The perpetual after-hours spot at 318 Richmond known to many as 23 Hop was given a $1 million-plus face-lift and reopened as Joker. Joker is huge, but laid out like Toronto's more established huge clubs, Whiskey Saigon, Freedom (ex-Big Bop) and Limelight -- they are big, but they divide up their space over a series of separate floors.

What this means for club kids is that they are given a choice of three or four different levels in one club, usually with each floor having its own separate DJ. This means that not only is it easier to spend a whole night in one place (getting bored with the R&B on one floor? Check out the house being played on the one above), but each floor is intimate enough to meet someone, and after you chat them up and realize that not only are they not your type but they have that leech look in their eye, you can simply run off to another floor and try all over again!

Usually you'll find the style of music you like somewhere in the big clubs. And while those among you who are dancing fiends will appreciate the big dancefloors that beckon you to have just one more drink and then Cut Loose!, those of us who pose, or are simply girls who go, will be doing it (and doin' it and doin' it) lounge style.

My absolute favourite Guv party was Labour of Love 2004, huge thanks to Dan and Rob for literally dragging me out to that one.
