Nem is hanging up the headphones...

Dear all,

You may wonder why I am writing this.

Well guys, I have come to a point in my life were I have to take a look and see what is going on.

As many of you already know I have been doing this for over 20 years, and I have had the privilege of playing sets alongside some of the greatest names in dance music, some of who I have even developed various degrees of friendship with some of them and for that I have counted myself blessed in many ways.
I have had the privilege of warming up or closing for people like Marco V, M.I.K.E., Joy Kitikonti, Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, Tiesto, JFK, Fergie, Carl Cox, Matt Hardwick, Simon Patterson (from Dogzilla) John Kelly, Brandon Block, Scott Bond, Ferry Corsten and played some great clubs too including the Ministry of Sound back in it’s heyday, Gatecrasher nights and plenty of other cool venues. For this I am truly grateful.

What I find now…
As I go to work at the weekends I so more and more younger faces, which is a good thing, but at the same time a look at the older DJs like myself who are still hanging in there and I ask myself, “Am I just hanging in there as well?”. Maybe I’m just hanging onto something that isn’t there for me anymore.

I am at a stage now where the only way that I can justify the lifestyle I have would be if I was making a lot of money off it and I have other things I want to do too… just haven’t figured out what yet.

I kid you not people, DJing 3 to 4 times every weekend and some midweek jobs too is hard work, stressful and does loose it’s appeal after some time. I love what I do, but I also love my family and a wife who I love, and even though they have been very supportive it’s time I give something back to them.

Once I have finished my last bookings in Ibiza I will be flying off to India again for a well deserved break and then I will take a look at what the future holds.

I am not saying that I give up DJing for good, but I am giving up until further notice.

The world of the DJ is changing with digital and Ableton etc. I like mixing with CDs but I am just not feeling Ableton Live. I have played a few sets at home and to be honest, I find that it has made what I do a matter of just pushing buttons and minimizes what I get out from it. It’s probably the future, but it’s one that I’m not a part of and don’t wish to be.

The final word from Nem is that from the 1st September 2006 my DJ career will be officially over and I am hanging up my headphones.

A side note is that I am still making music, and should something go right for me you would see a return, but it’s a dog eat dog world out there and for the time being I will be doing what I want to so that I can in time re-discover the joy and enthusiasm that it once gave me.

To all the new guys out there I wish you all the success in the world. I will be back on the forums every now and again but for the time being I feel I need to take a complete break just to find my direction.

I will miss you guys as I have made some good friends here and I have enjoyed sharing some of my experiences and hopefully for what they are worth they may have helped someone.

Couldn’t resist putting in my highlight tunes that I have played during my career. These may not have been the best tunes overall but these are the tunes that defined everything that made me want to be a DJ. Based on crowd reaction and personal reasons.

10. Ayla -Ayla
9. Blank & Jones - Cream
8. Inzite - Spellbound
7. Jose Amnesia – The Eternal
6. Randy Katana – In Silence
5. Saltwater – The Legacy
4. Gouryella - Tenshi
3. Push – Strangeworld (2000 remake)
2. Tiesto – Suburban Train
1. Energy 52 – Café Del Mar

Café del Mar defined the Ibiza experience for me both as a clubber and a DJ.

All the best and good luck in the pursuit of your dreams.
Karl

PS
If you have a question for me then send me a ‘tell’ and I will give you my e-mail address… it can even be if you want to stay in contact or you want me to listen to a set. I will do my best to answer as long as time allows.

Thats a damn shame dude. I've never asked you for help personally but I know you've been a pretty integral part of this section of TA for quite awhile. I wish you the best. Enjoy the vacation.
