You bet it in' does! :whip: Why the does somebody have to be there to hear it? It still makes a in' sound!!! :whip:
What if your phone rings at home and nobody's there? Does it make a sound? Of course it does...but only if the ringer is turned on, dumbass!!! |
The people that ask these kinds of questions and pretend they are deep really piss me off. This ain't deep. All you have to do is define the important concepts in the question and you got your answer.
example
"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
answer
"If you mean sound as a sound wave, then yes, because the sound wave is physically created by the friction of the falling tree. If you mean sound as an auditory experience, then no, because there's noone around to experience the sound wave. Now off and DIE!" |

To blatantly plagiarize The Far Side:
If a tree falls in the forest and it hits a mime, does anyone care? |

Yeah hate that too, then you break it down for them and they go "no... you just don't understand..."
Like the chicken and egg one. At some point something which wasn't quite a chicken laid a slighly mutated egg which had what would become the first ever chicken in it hence egg before chicken. Tried explaining that to people had spent 4 years doing philosophy all I got back was "no no no no" *knowing, caring, smug smile* "that's just not how it works" when asked to point out where it is wrong they couldn't.... |

You're the moron. This is a classic case of "ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer." So I'll add people that say "oh really?" after I said something to my list. No you doorknob, I was just testing your hearing. YES REALLY. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have said it. |
It's an expression of astonishment, not because I don't believe someone. Not exactly expecting an answer back when I say it. Jerk. |

You're missing the point. It's not a scientific question, it's a philosophical one. The tree is just a metaphor.
Anyway, what bugs me is people who start a sentence with "no offense, but..." as if that preface provides them automatic immunity. It doesn't work like that, morons. You can't say "no offense, but you're a total idiot and I banged your mom" and not expect to offend. |

You're talking out of your ass, friend.
What I wrote before was the exact thing my philosophy prof said about the "deep tree question" in the first class of a logic course at my university.
But for a laugh, fill in the blank in the sentence - "the tree is a metaphor for _______"
I can't WAIT to read your answer |

If it was an expression of astonishment, it'd end with an exclamation mark, and not a question mark. |
