while I am not an avid trance listener anymore, I do respect everything Paul has done in the past and IS doing now.

Allen & Heath Xone:3D mixer + custom midi controller + Ableton Live = pwnage! I was unfortunately catching up with some friends I haven't seen for a long time and didn't really pay attention to everything PVD was doing or playing but he was getting a great response from the crowd.

I left about 1:30 and headed to Vision to catch Khoury KILLING the place!!! Thanks for letting me throw down with you for a min KID!

Did you catch much of what he actually had going on up there? I only ask because I've heard kind of a lot of people complain that PVD sets up this elaborate setup with Ableton and then basically just transition mixes and really doesn't take advantage of anything beyond that, but as I'm not a PVD fan I've never really taken the time to actually find out for myself.

Glad to see you guys had a good time... :)

that's what I thought. I didn't take a look at his setup until later on. If I was just LISTENING to it, I would have thought he was using Ableton (just because I know he uses Ableton) and a regular mixer. Later on I was looking at what he was doing and he was using the controllers - I think whatever he was doing was very seamless - not surprisingly - and thusly might be harder to tell that he was doing it. But the music delivered.

there was a breakdown where I seen him playing some keys on his keyboard as if to fill in the break with some pads or strings... but it was about 15 seconds and then he went back to the mixer & custom controller. It looked like he was firing off loops and such from his controller which looked like it was a bunch of arcade buttons!!! It had about 4 rows of 8 to 10 buttons each and then 4 knobs.

Very nice!

Always glad to see folks using Ableton properly (especially as I can't even figure out how to mix two tracks in it :wtf: ) - Thanks for the explanation guys! Again, glad to see you guys had a great time - That crowd shot looks sick!
Dj Spiel
Well, his set was better than the last one at Vision.

Although being sober that nite & watching him from ABOVE (VIP AREA)

NO beat mixing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just messing with Eq's!

A dj that mixed that nite (i wont say a name) Even told me yeah & I QOUTE

"hey paul

thanks for the props. i know i was watching pvd myself and asking why guys like that make so much money right. you might as well have put a cd on.

hope you find the track"

This was last year @ Vision. Last nite PVD brougt soemthing back though that I didnt hear in a long time. He was into it. I know the road is near for him. Somehow I think that was his last show at Congress
Dj Spiel
I also like to add.... that I miss the days where he mixed with VINYL- - u knew what u were getting & what you paid for.

huh?
Dj Spiel
That was a qoute from a Dj. When he played last year at Vision basically saying . . . it was pre-recorded
SENECA
man... it's a tired debate... I'm not even gonna start.

Dj Spiel
Yeah, you shouldn't. Watching him all nite tweak eq's & hit a button on a laptop. . .

Then having a DJ CONFIRM as he is literally sitting right behind him watching him play.

I mean..I love PVD the guy has rank and frankly when you are that known I guess you can do whatever you want.

When I saw him 4 yrs ago at MEcca Factory in Ohio. . . He did STRAIGHT UP VINYL.

AND IT WAS A GREAT SET... his last nite was good also.

I mean come on Seneca...as a Vinyl dj/cd dj ....dont u just have more respect for people that do that?

Ill be honest man...I am using FS2 . I think its great but you still have to mix with cd's/vinyl- -

I got respect for him and all just that when u pay 40 50 bucks I want a show. I mean if you hire someone to fix ur tub and they do is half way youre gonna be angry right?

Lately it seems only people in the industry, such as DJs care about how another DJ performs. I bet if you asked anybody out there in the crowd how they would prefer Paul to play they wouldn't give a crap. 99% would say they just want him up there CREATING the vibe and it doesn't matter HOW he creats that vibe. The people that understand how that vibe is created is a different story and those people are me and you, a very small percentage of the crowd.

I think once you have earned your respect through the years showing that you KNOW how to mix and create a killer vibe, that it doesn't matter which way you do it as long as the dancefloor is full and people are going crazy. It's sort of like creating music as my good friend Delobbo once said, "It doesn't matter how you make the music, all that matters is what comes out of those speakers". I'm not saying this is HOW it is, this is my opinion of course but hopefully I'm showing you a different way of looking at it.

I personally admire Paul for embracing technology and trying to perform in a new way instead of just mixing the plain old vinyl or CDs. If it were a more intimate venue such as Spybar then I think the vinyl adds to the effect b/c the people are a lot closer to the performer.

I bought Ableton because I want to expand the WAYS that I can perform as an artist. For example I am playing @ vision in the penthouse and Mamby @ moonshine shortly. Those are more intimate venues and I'm probably going to play (GASP!) vinyl or cds. Now if I was playing to a much larger crowd such as @ the congress last night I would have most likely brought my Ableton setup to do more that just mix the songs together! It's really not about making it easier to mix... it's about making it more exciting in an AUDIBLE way.
