Hey Seneca,

What you said... made sense and i agree totally. Not ripping on PVD....perhaps at your next gig I can show up if you're using abelton.

"I have know idea how that works" For some reason I am thinking it takes very little skill & beat matching. It's like like fading in & out. Am i wrong? Maybe that's why I am so judgemental. At least with Serato & FS2 you know you "have to mix"

That being said...The vibe, lights everything was up to par.WAY WAY WAY better than I thought it would be. Probably his last gig there too.

One could use it just to fade in/out one track into another. However, most people that invest their time, money, and creative effort into using the program do a little bit more than that.

It functions as a pretty good production tool as well. I use it for production and "DJing" occasionally, and since I suck ;) I'll throw out some legit names: James Zabiela, Jaytech, Blake Jarrell, Sasha, Richie Hawtin, PvD, etc., etc.

You can check out the demo at www.ableton.com and then see what you think for yourself :)

there was this little guy by the name of Bing Crosby back in the early 30's that had the revolutionary idea to use this new technology called magnetic tape to prerecord his radio shows and edit them. at the time, ALL radio was live and the thought of a radio show not being performed live was insulting to most people. over time people realized that through this new technology their listening experience was being enhanced, the shows were more fluid, entertaining, and just plain sounded better. 76 years later we could not even fathom not listening to prerecorded, formatted radio, we accept it. that little guy Bing Crosby went on to become the highest paid entertainer in world history and has sold more records than micheal jackson, madonna, and prince combined.

naysayers: please do yourself a favor, look up what a PARADIGM SHIFT is. i seriously get violent when this topic arrises. its so sad to see people base djing solely on an archaic math equation (beatmatching). the art of djing existed long before beatmatching, and the essentials of djing (floor control, track selection, execution, etc) will still exist long after the dogmatic cling to beatmatching has faded. simply put: beatmatching is, for some people, the coolest thing they know how to do, and is the only thing that makes them feel they are capable of doing what this superstar on stage is doing. ableton totally s that vision up for them, because ableton is not easily grasped by the majority.

also, the main thing i noticed about paul's brilliant use of ableton last night was his improvised medley of classics last night, all restructured and edited on the fly, something completely impossible from analog djing.

Out of the names you listed, it's oddly Sasha who is perhaps taking least advantage of Ableton. After Senca and Delobbo's reviews of PVD, it just seems that out of the personal reviews I've heard and from the live shows I've seen (particularly Miami where we were essentially in the booth and I had a sick view of his computer screen) he just doesn't appear to do nearly as much. Though again, I know little of ableton insofar as DJ'ing, so I could be completely off my on this as well...

Massive for production - I love it :)

Edit: Dammit - This is Rob, Myra was still logged in on my laptop... :clown:

Yeah - The only reason I brought it up was some of the reviews of PVD I had read as of late (on forums just like these, so who knows how credible these folks were) seemed to say he wasn't really doing much with it, so I guess I wanted to ask MWTA as I knew there'd be a few of you paying attention :)

AH HA!!! Those remixes would be labled (PVD 10.07 Congress Remix) because he created them THERE at that moment. This my friend is the power of ableton and you have got to agree that says so much about what can be done with performing that way. You've heard those remixes for the first time and possibly the last because it was improvised.

I mean DJ throws on a record and you hear the beginnings of a track that you know... and you know how it's going to go because you've heard it before. Now with Ableton... you can change everything!

sorry don't mean to beat a dead horse but I just like to show others the light!
