Thanks weymouth and CleverName, I'll check some of those (which I haven't seen yet). Thanks to the rest, but once again, I'm not looking for movies like Battlestar Galactica or The Fifth Element (I've seen the latter, and good though it was, it's still a typical blockbuster hit with a typical hollywood ending - not what I'm after).
These merit mention as well:
The Fly
The Day After
Mad Max 2
Altered States |

a lot of you say this movie blows, but if you've read anything about.by carl sagan, you'd know that when he was alive, he was theorizing things about space that were WAY ahead of his time, things that were unbelieveable then, but are common fact now. the man was truely brilliant, both as a writer, and as an astronomer. |

One of my favorite sci-fi movies of all-time. |

Dune (1984 David Lynch version, of course)
The Island (Maybe a little more on the action side, but still some very compelling science fiction themes)
Aeon Flux (Both the series and the movie were fantastic visions of futuristic dystopia amidst order)
eXistenZ (MIND)
Starship Troopers (Ok, so the movie isn't *nearly* as thought-provoking as the book is, still some really great sci-fi elements to the movie)
Ghost in the Shell (Ok, so this was already mentioned, but it's worth listing twice. Mind-shattering Sci-Fi doesn't get a whole lot better than this...except for eXistenZ) |

not exact fits to your specification, but try these on anyway:

Ersaserhead
Scanners
A Clockwork Orange |

while i did enjoy the movie, it's far from being up to cronenberg standards, if i hadn't known it was him i'd assume it was james cameron or someone of his 'caliber'. |
